Scottish Kirk Sessions now available on Scotland's People
From the latest Lost Cousins newsletter, https://www.lostcousins.com/newsletters2/apr21news.htm More about that at https://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/news/kirk-session-records-scotlandspeople/ This rip-roaring article by Chris Paton explains why that is important! Although Scottish parish registers helpfully allow us to trace who our ancestors were, it is the records of the kirk sessions that more specifically help us to understand how the Kirk worked within society as an institution. The registers of individual kirk sessions not only recall the everyday administrations of a church''s elders and minister, but also provide a record for one of the session''s primary functions – its role as the lowest of the Kirk''s courts. Entire article is here: https://discoveryourancestors.co.uk/articles/sitting-on-the-penitent-s-stool-61/ Enjoy! Valorie http://about.me/valoriez - pronouns: she/her

Hi Malcolm
I see no "Nesbitt" names nor the other ones you mentioned, but there is 1 Chambers: "Elmira Chambers died May 20, 1873 aged 26 yrs. 6 mos. " If they lived in Peel County, I would recommend going to the website, "Find a Grave" + Ontario + Peel. Then go down the list of cemeteries using your ancestors' surname to see if they come up with a match. Often they also have a photo of the gravestone. Good Luck! Toni

Catherine d. 1894 was my GGgmother and I have visited and photographed the grave. I was unaware of grave #84 and can not place these. They appear to be siblings, and if they were b. in Ontario, they precede the arrival of my McNabbs in 1852. They may have been cousins of my Catherine. Yes, that Robert Lawson, husband of Catherine, had a farm on the bank of the River Credit, just east of Cheltenham. Claude was the church, which I have visited and I have the records from it. I'm glad to have your confirmations. Ken

Very interesting, Anne. Thank you. So that’s where the name Cardwell came from. I know, from reading the microfilmed census, that the name “Cardwell Co.” was on each page in the space for “county”, so perhaps it was not fictional, just impermanent. Ken

Thanks, Ken for clarifying that. Maybe they wanted to name a township for Cardwell and almost used it instead of Peel and then when Muskoka opened up in the 1868 they used Cardwell for a township in Muskoka.
I just had so many questions in my head when I saw Cardwell & Caledon in the same location. Names of places changed so often as Canada West, Upper Canada, Ontario grew and developed over the years. Keeping track of the dates when names changed is a big part of doing genealogy in Ontario. I assumed it was in Peel because this is where so many immigrants stopped for a year or two while looking for land and obtaining the paperwork.
PS. Peel was probably a priority as he was the UK Prime Minister at the time Viscount Cardwell was minister for the colonies in the Peel cabinet at the time.

Check on the Canadian Census site. About 40 years ago I learned that “Cardwell Co.” (not Cardwell Twp.) as used in this census was a fictional County and the location was actually in Peel County. I don’t remember why this was done, or whether it was an error, but the fiction was consistent throughout that census for that area. The actual home was in Caledon Twp, Peel Co., and nowhere near Muskoka.

The location for Duncan in the 1871 Census is interesting. Cardwell Township is in the Parry Sound and Muskoka District in 1871. Both sets of my maternal 2x great grandparents settled there at that time. Caledon is north of Brampton in Peel County. They are 200+ kms apart.
Duncan and Grace are not part of my McNabb family as far as I know. All of the immigrant McNabbs were in Oro Twp, Simcoe County by 1850. Later many members of the younger generations moved to the West. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. One also appears in Revelstoke. I think that branch ended up on Vancouver Island.

Duncan was a weaver, and emigrated to Canada with the family about 1852, but I have not located a death record. Some family papers suggest they went first to somewhere near Chatham, Ontario (no proof of this that I have found) but had moved to Chinguacousy, Ont within a year or two. He shows in both the 1861 & 1871 censuses, living with one of his married daughters in Caledon Twp. Grace also emigrated with family in 1852, according to family papers, but I have never found a record of her in Canada. Believe they were married in Manitoba but trying to trace down a son and daughter he had with a Mary Livingston/Livingstone. I believe they had a son called Duncan McNab who was born in the U.S. - looking for the place he was borne.
