Thank you I will try researching these new names. I do know my ggrandmother had 2 sisters named Mary, Janet and a Flora which could be named after Effies mother.

I don’t have James or Effie in my family tree at all. There are some family trees on Ancestry for this couple but not much information in most of them. I notice in one family tree, put there by a Brent Knutson, it has James as dying before 1902 at PEI. It has James’ father as Walter Nicolson 1802-1851.
It has Effie’s parents as Angus Macleod & Flora Bethune.
One child is shown for James & Effie and she is Mary Jeanette Nicholson 1868-1921.
So I don’t know if any of this is of any help to you. Lots of stuff on Ancestry Family Trees can be incorrect also, I have found.
Cheers,
Ian

I notice you have Nicholson and Macleod going to Canada. I have a James Nicholson b.1826 and a Effie Macleod b.1836 coming from Scotland to Canada. They settled on P.E.I. It had to be around the early 1860s because my ggrandmother was born in 1864 on P.E.I. and her oldest sister was also born there. It seems the Nicholsons and Mcleods married each other often. The only thing I don't have are the parents of either James or Effie. I just know that they married in Scotland and then went to Canada. Would you have anything on the couple.

Quist Family
Hello, I am researching two parts of my family. First is John Leslie of Burntisland, buried in the Kirkton Churchyard. He is my 3x Grear Grandfather through his son John Leslie who immigrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1860. Second is James Mackerwithey/Mcrory who was a prisoner during the Battle of Dunbar sent as a slave to Massachusetts. There are many theories on his clan and place of origin, but he was born around 1630. I believe that he was born in Petty, Inverness-shire, Scotland to John McRorie. Another common belief is that he was born in the Outer Hebrides to Robert and Sarah Macrory. Erik Quist

Unfortunately, many digest subscribers simply reply to one of the messages in the digest without changing the subject heading and without including prior emails on the same subject -- which makes it very difficult for readers to follow the conversation thread. As someone else pointed out, having useful and self-explanatory subject headings that directly relate to the subject matter is very important for readers of the list and, especially, for those looking up the list archives. The admins of some lists with which I'm associated do not allow weekly digest subscriptions, and that's what I would do if I was an admin. I am looking for Farquhar McLeay, husband of Ann Campbell, whose last child Colin was born on 1836 and is registered in both Urray and Kilmorack. In 1841 Ann is in Kilmorack listed as a crofters widow. Family story is that Farquhar’s father was Donald McLeay of the 77th Rosshire Heilanders, but there are no Donald boys among Farquhars children, they were Murdoch, Murdoch, John, Alexander, Farquhar,Colin and girls Ann and Margaret. Where did Farquhar die? who were his parents? Ann,Colin and Murdoch migrated to Tasmania, Australia, in 1855. Elizabeth

Archibald NICOLSON and Margaret MCLEOD of Isle of Skye
Ian & Margaret Kelly
Hi, I am trying to find some living descendants of Archibald NICOLSON (1828-1907) and Margaret MCLEOD (c1832-after 1911 census). They lived at Glenmore on Isle of Skye and are both buried on Skye. Archibald was a crofter. They had eight children as under:
Mary 1859-1898 (known as old Mary) married William CAMPBELL. They had only one child Nora Mary (1898-1899).
Christy b1861 married 2nd cousin John NICOLSON. Had about eight children: 1 Donald, 2 Archibald, 3 Rachel, 4 Hugh, 5 Murdoch, 6 Alexander, 7 Norman, 8 John.
Catherine 1862-1950 married William COULL – no children.
Mary 1864-1962 (known as young Mary) married John MACLEOD. Had one child Norman Nicholson Macleod who married Catherine Mary UMBERS. I have this one sorted.
Ann b1865 – no further information.
Murdo 1867-1955 married Euphemia (Effie) MACASKILL. Had five children: 1 Mary Kate (never married, no issue), 2 Archibald, went to Canada & married Ingrid ASPELUND, 3 Sarah married Malcolm DUNCAN, 4 Norman married Joan BRADLEY, 5 Margaret (Rita) married George ROSIE (lived Aberdeen area).
Norman 1869-1871.
Norman 1871-1896 never married, no issue.
I would like to hear from anyone who has information on any of the above people.
Thank you, Ian Kelly, Queensland, Australia

Hello Shirley, and all on our List,
Sorry I am unable to help you with your names of interest. My late husband was a Graham, Gordon Temple Graham, but born in England. He had no idea he was actually of Scottish descent, although his name would surely have provided him with an inkling, one would think! Name following family lines is a huge pain for me, too, both in Scotland and Ireland.
My interests are mainly Mitchell; Mather; Cameron; More; and Bulloch. All resplendently blessed with James, Alexander, Robert, Malcom; Margaret, Mary, and Janet.
Good luck in your quest. Kindly, Dee. Moreton Bay island.

Greetings to everyone. It's nice to see that the Islay site is still as vibrant as ever. My thanks to all of the people involved in setting up the new site. I have been researching for over 20 years but still have some brick walls. I'm looking for any info on the following: John McLugash married to Agnes (Ann) Campbell 13 March 1786. I have no info on Agnes other than this date. My family follows the McLugash (all spellings) line. Son Alexander died Mulindry. He married Mary McNeill from Kilmeny 1814. Her parents were Archibald McNeill and Catherine Kelly. I'm looking for any info on her. Other research interests are: Caskie Portnahaven/Kilchoman/Canada Paisley; Mitchell Portnahaven/Kilchoman Canada Greenock Good Hunting everyone Janet (Ontario)

Re: Researching McLugash/McDougall, Caskie, Mitchell, McNeill, Campbell etc
John Kemplen
Hi Janet I don't know if we have direct links but some of the names and locations that you mention crop up in my family too. My great grandmother Margaret McLugash, born c.1852, was raised at Lenanbuie, probably by her grandparents Donald McLugash and Catherine Carmichael. Her father was John McLugash and her mother was Margaret Campbell of Mulindry. I do not think John and Margaret married, and I think they probably met when John was employed at Mulindry. Margaret Campbell's parents were John Campbell (born c.1780) and Christy Carmichael (born c.1786). My McLugashes seem to have moved around within a very small area at Gartachossan, Lenanbuie and Starchmill, only a mile or so from Mulindry, so it is not too surprising that there appear to have been a number of liaisons/marriages between McLugashes and Campbells in that area. Hi Marjorie,
My G-G-Grandparents MORE who lived in Coalhill, Lannarkshire. I have not yet started to research MORE, but they are related to both my MITCHELL, CAMERON, and BULLOCH families. It is a long time since I have tried to trace this family so must apologise for the lack of data I can remember without studying my records again. All I recall is that he was a Clerk in a coalmine and her given names were MARY BULLOCH, the second name was probably her mother’s or grandmother’s maiden name. Shall have a look at the data for them over this weekend and get back to you .
