Good thought - but none of his ancestors, as far as I know, were associated with Moray. They're all from Midlothian particularly Edinburgh and Dalkeith Rosemary Northumberland, UK

Trying to think out of the box here ... There is a place called Dallas in Moray. It is not unheard of to use a favourite place as an additional middle name. If you have evidence of the parents or other close family living, visiting, or originating from Moray, then this would be a possibility.

and border families this year. We have
only been able to get back to a Thomas WAUGH and Christon Ballentine in
Castleton/Newcastleton late 1700’s . We
went to the local Museum in Newcastleton and a very knowledgeable curator, Anne, could tell
us where they lived when their children were born from the places on the baptism
page. Tales of Bothies and how big they
were to how Castleton moved to Newcastleton, a lovely place.

Hi Bret and everyone,
Just for starters, here are some of my Scottish surnames with more-or-less specific locales: Gardner/Wilson- Glasgow, late 1700s- mid-1800s (I believe they came from elsewhere to work in the textile factories, but that's just speculation). Colden- Borders region, mid-to-late 1600s to mid-1700s- at least 2 generations were ministers and lived in several different towns including Duns, Oxnam, Bunkle, Whitsome Christie- Kelso- late 1600s to early 1700s Rhind- Aberdeenshire and Banchory-Devenick- mid-1700s to early 1800s Ross- Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire- 1700s+ Juliann "42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything."- Douglas Adams

Hi all,

I am chasing up my McLeay line from Blarnabee, Ross and Breachachy Inverness. They married McIvor, Campbell and Frasers. They went to Tasmania Australia in 1855 and Colin McLeay married Alexandrina Munro from Armadale Scotland; they met in Victoria Australia. In particular I am looking for the death of Farquhar McLeay about 1836. His youngest son Colin is in the parish registers at Kilmorack in 1836 and his wife Ann McLeay née Campbell is listed as a Crofters widow in the 1941 Kilmorack census. There was a newspaper report when his daughter Ann died in Tasmania that she was the granddaughter of Donald McLeay of the 77th Rosshire Heilanders. I am interested in this Donald McLeay. Eliz

in Ireland and immigrated to scotland with his parents. They had 4 boys and 2 of the boys immigrated to Canada abt 1871. 1 would have been my 2nd great grandfather Alexander Begley. Apparently he changed the name when he came over. Thanks. Karen. My other

Ok - final thought - I have also found a middle name associated with a very close friend who was a neighbour (found by accident on a census). You may want to examine the census listings for 1851/61/71 and see if any of the neighbours of James' parents had the surname DALLAS. Yes, its not likely, but I guess you are looking for any line of enquiry. Good luck!

Re: Test
Lynne Roberts
Well, I'm behind the eight ball here - my guess that someone has requested a roll call, so I'll add my Scottish brick wall. My 3rd great grandfather is Duncan Campbell - is there a more common Scottish name? He arrived in the US around 1800 with a wife, Christiana and daughter Katherine. I have researched him extensively for years and have found not a whiff of information about his origins other than "Scotland" - not even in his naturalization information. I went to Scotland - and spent a great deal of time on Scotland's people looking for christening or other family documents that might give me a clue. Based solely on the given names - I finally decided that he came from the Killin area in Perthshire. I found a letter from a Peter Campbell about son Duncan (Duncan's oldest son was named Peter) in the Scottish archives in Edinburgh complaining about to the laird about the misappropriation of land. The family ended up in Radnor, Delaware, OH after stops in Pennsylvania and Licking Co, OH. This is probably TMI but I'm always hoping that something will ring a bell with someone. Re: Thanks for invite
As a matter of interest Karen. Has any of your McArthur male line been DNA tested please. Either Familytreedna or ancestry.com autosomal and My Heritage autosomal.. If they have you have then answered my question as we have no McArthur matches, but if not, hopefully one day they will test as to date familytreedna have about 35 McArthur members in their McArthur or Arthur project and we dont match with any of their McaRthur males there and dot have for the autosomal companies to date. Also the location for our McArthurs who have tested to date are from the Highlands, Keay in Caithness and other ares of Caithness, Sunderland and one inLismore. We have done the Y111 marker test and th BigY700. Have already put the naems that are coming up and like your fellow there has been a name change along the line at least prior to the mid to late 1700's. It is looking as if McArthur was an alias, inherited or other surname. Cant find anything onthe father Duncan McArthur, though downloaded a website with farms, that listed tenants at Breadalbane and are of interest. They listed tenants by the names of McArthur for the year 1767, it was a survey. I note another one for 1780 is available as well. regards Edie McArthur

Two suggestions regarding names of interest
Bret Busby
Hello.
I have two suggestions for people, regarding names of interest. The first, is, when posting a message with the name of someone that you are researching, put the name in the message subject line, so that people can easily see it, when scanning the lists of message subjects, when we are looking for names that interest us; name (best in all uppercase), place, and, year. The second, is, for each family name that you have, of interest, when you have posted your message, go to the group web page, and, at the top of the group web page, you should see a menu item "Find or Create a Group". click on that, which will take you to a Search web page, and, do a search to find whether a group exists for the family name; if so, join it, and post a message also to that group, about your person/people of interest, related to that name, if you have not already. And, remember - we who are migrating Rootsweb lists to groups.io groups, are doing this on an ongoing basis, so, I am currently doing it at the rate of two or three a day, and, with other Rootsweb List Administrators doing this, the name groups are being added to, daily, so, it is worth checking weekly, if not daily, to find whether your names of interest, have name genealogy groups, at groups.io . As a single example, the Rootsweb Kane mailing list, got migrated to the Kane-genealogy group, in the last day or so. The more places that a fisher sets a line, the more chance of obtaining a catch, and, the potential to catch more. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .............. Re: Test
Edie McArthur
Hi Lyn, I am jumping on the band wagon again as one of the surnames coming through for the 9 branches on the McArthur lineage is Campbell. I ask you as well as another researcher. Has any of your Campbell males been Ydna tested with familytreedna. I have two sons and their father tested. One son and his father have Y111 nine men including the Campbell is still there.I will need to look which location but most are from the Caithness and Sunderland area. Duncan and Peter are used as sons by our Bounty Immigrant John McArthur who we too are having trouble with. A DNA test all male line would help but alos autosomal. We have tests with ancestrycom as well as My Heritage for the autosomal tests also Family Finder and YDNA with Familytreedna. It will close the gap a little. I will take a lootk later and see which area the Campbell comes from. If you have tested and dont match with us that is the answer though isnt it? regards Edie McArthur Edie McArthur
