Calton burial ground Edinburgh

Hi listers
Good to see the group up and running. My certificate for the burial ground has it spelt two ways so I am not sure, but am looking for index or a disc for burials.  Was not needing it when in Scotland earlier this year and was at Scots Genealogy. Guess that will need to be my first port of call. Suppose it is useless to look for Lair records , which in the past I have received for Peebles, but am told very few have survived.
Am looking for Plenderleith and Sutherland at present.
Cheers

Not too sure, but is this what you are looking for?

My GG Grandfather is buried by himself on a hill near Maywick Beach in Shetland.  He died in a fishing accident many years ago and not found until 6 months later.  So he was dragged in a sail to this burial spot and his brother asked to identify him. This resulted in the brother having a nervous breakdown and it was some time before he could fish again.  It took me years of searching to finally find a written piece about the accident but finally did.

Cowan and Scott in Selkirkshire, Scotland

In 1832, my direct-line Cowan ancestors left Selkirkshire, Scotlan for Lower Canada (now Ontario, Canada). Walter Cowan born 19 August 1809, Yarrow Feus, Selkirkshire.

He married 1. Jean 'Jennie' Scott 'of Harden' on 24 February 1805, Yarrow, Selkirkshire. Jean Scott was born 1780-1790 possibly in Harden, Roxburghshire. She could have been the daughter of George Scott,  M2TL-5VG on FamilySearch. I'll have to look at the baptism record in my local Family History Center to see if there is more in the image than just two names.

They had three sons, one of whom died a few months after birth:

A. James Scott Cowan (proven by DNA)
Born 19 August 1809 • Yarrow Feus, Selkirkshire, Scotland
Died 29 September 1893 • Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

B. Andrew Cowan
Born 25 January 1814 • Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland
Died 5 April 1814 • Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland

C. Walter Scott Cowan my 2nd great-grandfather
Born 31 October 1817 • Yarrow Feus, Selkirkshire, Scotland
Died 20 June 1886 • Wellington, Ontario, Canada

James came first to Canada to find land for the family before they came in 1832.

Here is James with his family in 1851:

Walter Cowan married again, presumably after Jennie's death, sometime between Walter Scott's birth and the new marriage on 4 November 1821 in Yarrow, Selkirkshire, Scotland

2. Agnes Willison
Born  ~1800 • Scotland
Died 1853 in Galt, Waterloo, Upper Canada, now Ontario, Canada (only her headstone established that date)

Walter and Agnes had two children in Yarrow Feus, William and Jane Scott. Jane died in Ontario unmarried. I have no identified DNA matches through William's line - yet. I've not built it all the way down yet.

As you can see, I have more work to do on this family, especially in the Scottish records. If you have any connection to the family, please speak up! I love collaborating with cousins.

Hi
I am looking for Farquhar McLeay who fathered a child Colin born 1836 in Blarnabee, Urray.
Where did Farquhar die and where is he buried?
By 1841 the family minus him is in Kilmorack.
Any ideas?

Hi Josephine (and everyone) -- there have been lots of posts to this list since it was set up some months ago. If you login to https://scotland-genealogy.groups.io and browse or search messages, you will see hundreds. You can see and search the subgroups as well -- Islay has been particularly busy.

All the best,

Re: McLeay 1830s

There is a Farquhar McLeay at Kiltarlity in the 1841 census. He married Ann Fraser in 1837 and they have two children born 1838 and 1839 or so.
He is aged 58 in 1871.

Re: McLeay 1830s

Thank you.
My Farquhar married Ann Campbell in 1820 in Urray and my rel Colin is his last born 1836. Ann is listed as a crofters widow in Kilmorack in the 1841 census.
However they did have an earlier born son also Farquhar who we think went to America, not in Kilmorack in 1841.
Interesting also Farquhar senior and Ann Campbell had a daughter Margaret who married Simon Fraser in Inverness and had a daughter Ann.
I do not think this Kiltarlity Farquhar is my ancestor Colins brother, but it is possible, and something to keep in mind . He is too young to be Colins father. Of course ages can be incorrect...
My understanding is the family moved from Blarnabee Urray about the time Colin was born and Farquhar died around then.
Mother Ann  and children Colin, Murdoch and Ann McLEAY went to Australia on the Storm Cloud in 1855. Later Granddaughter Ann FRAZER joined them after both her parents died in Scotland.
So many rePeated  names make it difficult.

Hi Elizabeth

All the family trees on Ancestry have Farquhar McLeay death as 1838 in Scotland but with no place. I have search Scotland people and cannot find a death for Farquhar McLeay either side of that date by 10 years.

There seems to be a couple of families from around the same area that could be connected.

This one is Farquhar McLeay and Ann McCiver who had the following

Children,

Murdock Baptism 7/10/1822 in Urray,

Alexander Baptism 21/9/1824 in Urray,

Farquhar Baptism 21/9/1824, in Urray

Farquhar Baptism 14/4/1827, Urray

Your family is Farquhar McLeay and Ann Campbell born c1811 Ardacky  Kilmorack, Inverness, Scot.

Children:

Margaret Baptism 15 March 1832 Kilmorack, Inverness, Scotland Film/no 990709

Ann Baptism 28 April 1835 Kilmorack as above

Colin Baptism 8 Dec 1836 Kilmorack same as above.

I found a Margaret McLennan married to a Simon Fraser 1870 but I did find a Margaret McLeay married to a Finlay Fraser in 1855 in Kilmorack.

Also found a Farquhar McLeay in NSW Police a Probationary Constables 1 Nov 1884 and 1 Feb 1885 police officer shield no 4785. He might be something to do with your family.

Hope this helps

Re: McLeay 1830s

Here is a ‘glimmer’ of hope.  See the film for this parish for these years (1838 ish).  The Parish Minister had to keep a record of income and expenses, so often (NOT ALWAYS) you will see a page in the record of marriages and births called Mort Cloth Rentals.  While it won’t tell you what date the death took place it will give the date the Mort Cloth was rented to place over the deceased.  Of course it would depend on whether or not the family could afford to rent one.  Not all, but most parishes had 2 Mort Cloths.....one for the poorer folks and one for those who had more money.  The cloth covered the body to the grave yard where it was removed before burial.  I have seem many films and must say not all parishes put this info in the register book for births and marriages, but on occasion you get lucky.  And note....it may say “Joe Smith’s wife” and not give her by her first and maiden name.  Worth the ‘shot’......Goldie

Re: McLeay 1830s

Thank you.
My McLeay FRASER connection I believe is Margaret married Simon.
I understood two Murdock McLeays, imagined one died, but there was certainly a Murdock, Ann and Colin who came to Aus. With their mother Ann.
I understood Ann Campbell was born 1897 and she married FArquhar McLeay in 1820 in Urray and they moved to Kilmorack after Colin was born.
when Ann ,the daughter, dies in Launceston the death notice said she was the granddaughter of Donald McLeay of the 77th Rossshire Highlanders.
There were prominent McLeays in Australian parliament and a naturalist in sYdney which I have believed were not related.
Not sure where I go with this.
