Re: Falkirk Burns House
As far as I know there are no canals anywhere near Ellisland, or in Dumfries-shire or Ayrshire.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Karina, when do you think this Burns House might have been demolished? The Forth and Clyde Canal passes through Falkirk. It was opened in 1790. https://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/19721 In 1822 the Union Canal, linking Edinburgh with the Forth and Clyde Canal, was opened. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/12001 In the 1930s the Union Canal was closed and the flight of locks at Falkirk was built on. In the late 20th century the Union Canal was restored and the Falkirk Wheel was built to replace the flight of locks and reinstate the link between the two canals. http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NS8580 So it would be really useful to know roughly when you think this 'Burns House' might have been demolished. Also, do you think it had anything to do with Robert Burns, or are the references to places associated with him red herrings? Anne

Yes, I agree. I thought it was just Islay, but I am inundated now with other emails. So much so that I’ve been thinking of unsubscribing as there’s too much that’s of no relevance.

Try the Canadian, USA and Australian census for after 1871. Those were the most common places to emigrate, I think. I would start with the 1881, then the 1891....worth the try. Good luck, Goldie

Unfortunately I don't know the dates. All I know is that when the canal was built, it was demolished. It probably was around 1790. The Henderson family lived there, they married into the Callender family. Karina

Re: Falkirk Burns House
Thanks, Karin.

This means that it must have been demolished to make way for the Forth and Clyde Canal, rather than the Union Canal or any later development. So the canal company must have acquired the property, which means that there will be some record in the Registers of Sasines. These are in the National Records of Scotland, and the Abridgments of Sasines have been partly digitised, so when the system isn't being temperamental (it throws a wobbly from time to time) it shouldn't be too hard to find it. However it would mean a visit to the Historical Search Room in Edinburgh. It might be worth dropping a line to Falkirk Archives, however. https://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/sport-leisure-culture/heritage/archives.aspx - they are actually in Callander House, which is not far from the Union Canal. Also, this was during the lifetime of Robert Burns (1859-1796) so it cannot have anything to do with him, and references to Ellisland, Dumfries etc are totally irrelevant. Anne

How to control your messages
Hi folks, the topic keeps coming up from subgroup members (County Angus, Borders and Marches, Islay, Moray and Selkirshire so far) about why they are seeing all these posts they aren't interested in.
Login to https://scotland-genealogy.groups.io/ to set up your mail preferences or to mute topics and the same with your clan group. If you subscribed by mail or by responding to an emailed invitation, you don't have a login unless you created one previously. Here is the Help doc about that:
You can change from getting every message to getting a digest, and/or "mute" or follow topics. Groups.io gives us each quite a bit of power over what we want to see.
We owners and moderators have more power to do things like create and maintain a calendar, files, and other cool features, but it gives us much *less* power over each individual's subscription. We cannot change you from individual messages to Digest, for instance. Nor can we change your email, etc. This is all within your power.
All the best,
Valorie, for the owners and moderators

Because our Islay group was started with invites – we have no passwords. We cannot log in without a password.
Work around to set up a password below are instructions:
I Have Forgotten My Password/I Don't Have A Password To log in without a password, go to the login page and click the 'Email me a link to log in' button. Once you enter your email address, you'll immediately be sent an email with a link that will automatically log you into Groups.io. You will stay logged in for up to 30 days, unless you log out. You can then set a password if you wish, or you can continue to utilize the Email me a link to log in function to log in when needed.
