As explained earlier, Islay is a subgroup of the main group, Scotland-Genealogy. As an Islay subgroup subscriber, you are subscribed to both.
You can choose what to get in your inbox, no matter whether you use the group as a mail list or as a message board. Requesting help to all of your fellow members who only want to read about genealogy will not be helpful. James BARTON of Roucan, Scotland, born c1739, my DNA family name
Hi,
I would be interested in hearing from anyone belonging to this gentleman. James BARTON, born 1739 Roucan, Dumfires, Scotland. My brother has a 5 step match with him on Familytreedna. His information can be found on this database. https://www.bartondatabase.com/getperson.php?personID=i52607&;tree=gbtree I too have a match with some of his descendants though I do not know where they fit in but I have a 194 cm match with a lady on ancestry.com and we share William Robert BARTON 1829 at Alverstoke, Hampshre and his wife Anne BOGUES. I have a match with both of them. I am missing a great grandfather as William had several sons and my gt gf was one of them. My grandfather was born Edward Ernest PLACE born in Rochester Kent and through DNA I discovered my great grandfather Frederick Hugh PLACE 1874 was not Edwards natural father. My GT GM Edith Ann REED married Frederick when 8 months pregnant. Since then I have found all my family members who have DNA tested are matched to many folk with BARTON DNA. On the FTDNA front my brother has this James BARTON of Roucan, Dumfires 1739 and that is the furthest back so far anyone has given as furthest back ancestor on FTDNA. William BARTON father Samuel was also from Scotland and another Ireland. They are all mentioned on the database. Is there anyone on this list belonging to his family please. I do have a nice story from ancestry.com match had put up on her public page, along with photos etc, so that side of the family is okay, but it would be good to get a little on this fellow. It would also be great if more of you males on the list would think about having your direct line YDNA tested as there is a shortage of males doing the YDNA. Autosomal on ancestry is good for complimenting the YDNA as you can usually pick up and connect family from both tests.We have up to Big Y but the Y111 i the most useful unless you are an expert and do th Big Y. We are not experts. We went from the Y67 markers with 44 matches and after upgrading to Y111 111 markers we got rid of the false positives and down to 9 men of four surnames belonging to the same lineage on my childrens fathers side of the family. Three surnames on my own side of the family so worth doing the Y111. You get to see results of all the other markers. Y111 narrows it all down. Thanks Edie McArthur Australia -- EdieMc

Thank you Edie. So many people in Scotland came to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA and South Africa when times were so tough in Scotland. Many who stayed were sent to homes which this site proves.

My G Grandfather came with his parents to Canada in 1872 and returned to Scotland to wed his sweetheart in Arbroath before coming back to Canada. All of my Herd/Hird family comes from Arbroath tho the Herd/Hird family seem to have come from Fife. I recall this man as he lived until he was 98 and have fond memories of him. Longevity seems to run for many in my family. My Dad, Laurie Smith (his mother was a Hird) lived until he was 96 and he had two sisters who lived until 99 - almost 100 year. With so many people leaving Scotland and the Scottish people settling all around the world, you decision to stay on the general list makes a lot of sense to me. I have found in the past as well, that when you try to just be on a Name list for a particular country instead of a name list for all over, it soon drops off. When browsing the rootsweb list prior to this list, to see which was the most active, I found the Scotland list rather than the county list seemed to be the most active and most of the others were dormant already. I hope to subscribe to Renfrewshire, but I dont think it will be any more active than the Rootsweb one. What may save the lists is the fact you can now put images over on groups.io, that you were not able to on rootsweb.. That will be a plus I think. regards Edie

Hi Margaret, Thank you for contacting me but I can’t see any connection between your names and mine. I have no Nicholsons with given names of May or Duncan but plenty of Marys.
Do you have any dates for those people?
I have an Allan Nicholson (spelt Nicolson on Skye) who went to Ontario (Kinloss) in 1862. I have names of many of his descendants but no May or Duncan in his tree.

I'm inclined to think he was buried at Glasgow Necropolis although the burial register is not at all clear. I still don't understand why two different records give his burial in apparently different places - 'St. Mary's' and Glasgow High Church. And he won't have had a memorial stone to mark his parting.
