First Post and list of names Margaret #26 Hello from Tasmania, Australia, The names I have in my family are: Shields, Mather and Young (from Oxnam, Roxburgh), Galloway, Robertson, Snedden (Lanarkshire/Stirling) and Mowatt as yet unknown. A great big thank you to you folks who do what you do for all of us. (kudos Bret and Valerie) I felt so at home during my first trip to Scotland with my predominantly Scottish grandson, the MacMichael. I had great success with his ancestry thanks to many of you, particularly Malcolm Lockerbie. And Bruce McDowall -is that correct? I shall see her again in May when I cruise around the British Isles. I have more Scots, Irish, British ancestry than German and One day I hope to know about my Scots-Irish Wilsons. I have not heretofore felt I knew enough to query about them, but maybe soon. Sue fulk dietz Earliest known Scot ancestor is Henry Wilson ?-1805 whose father may have been David/Davis Wilson 1685-? Antrim, Ulster, Ireland and his father David/Davis Wilson 1650-? Inverness, Scotland. Will be wonderful to know for certain.

Hi, My name is Edie McArthur of Australia. For over 30 years seeking the birth place of John McArthur born 1828 in Scotland unknown. DNA matches do not reveal any McARTHUR but several surnems of branches of the McARTHUR lineage.I copied an pated my one and ony message tothe list a few moments ago as it was lenghty, so didnt want to repeat it but nothing has come through. DNA with 3 companies, say otherwise. by Edie McArthur I have been researching the McArthur family for over 32 years, have had a brick wall since that time except for the family in Tasmania and have the marriage certifcate of John and Isabella McArthur nee Stevenson in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. On that certificate it only tells me that John McARTHUR, Farm Servant, abode, Cathcart, Renfrewshire, was 28 at the time of marriage 2 December 1856 at the Established Church of Scotland, Cambuslang. His wife was Isabella STEVENSON Farm Servant, Cathcart, Renfrewshire aged 26. Johns father was Duncan McARTHUR deceased, Farm Servant. Johns mother was Margaret McARTHUR maiden name SMITH. Doesn't say where the parents had been living. The brides parents were John Stevenson and Brides mother Christina Ormiston of Cambuslang, LKS. Witness Robert Spiers and John Stevenson. Looking for years in Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire in the census records. I nor my son, who is reasonably new to Family History, haven't been able to ascertain in the 1841 and the 1851 census which of the Johns is ours. He is not with his parents in any of the census. I have never found the baptism of John anywhere in Scotland with Duncan McArthur or Margaret Smith, plenty of Margaret's of other surnames with a son John but not ours John was not in Scotland by the 1861 census as he was in Tasmania by 31 March 1857, having left the Clyde Scotland on the new Clipper ship "Broomielaw", leaving 20th December 1856. No marriage was found for Duncan McArthur and Margaret Smith, their son born 1828, I have no day or month. I guess Johns parents were born late 1700 or early 1800. Could be somewhere in the Highlands, as our DNA locations are Caithness and Sunderland but one also Isle of Lismore. . No sibings for John, though maybe Margaret if not married to Duncan, did married someone else and there could be DNA matches with another name. Havent got that far as yet. What we do now have though is it is becoming clear that our McArthur surname is not coming through any of three companies four of the family have tested with including FTDNA and we are waiting for our sons Big Y 700 results to be concluded. So far McDonald/MacDonald, MacNeill, Carmichael, Campbell are coming through strongly. it looks as if our McArthur name was an inherited one. That is not proven at this point. We haven't found anything on the name SMITH to date in any of the DNA. I went n the Caithness list yesterday to see if I could find any MacDonalds and found three we know are matches but they were 18 years ago and were just paper trail then. No activity on that list so I have now come here. Hope to hear from any family McArthurs who seem to go back at least late 1700's as Johns parents but no details of either of hem. John was living in Cathcart at the time of his marriage to Isabella Stevenson. Couldnt pick him out in the 1841/1851 census Isabellas family no problem. Banns of marriage read at Cathcart, LKS marriage took place in Cambuslang LKS. Looking for namess of Farms, so I can do some research in Cathcart as well before going back in time to the Highlands..
