Re: Currie / McVurich - please help
Janet Chubb
Morning all:
My Donald Currie born about 1768 Bowmore married Catherine Sinclair 4 Feb 1786. Roger McWee told me years ago no one knew who his father is, and if found out I would be told. In my tree I put his father as John Currie question mark.
Have a good day,
Janet Currie Chubb

Hello Jan, My Charlotte Murdoch (dau of Rev John Murdoch and Catherine Campbell) married Neil Currie in 1792 at Bowmore, they had 4 children that I know of Donald b 1793, John b 1795, Catherine Anne b 1806 and Mary b 1810. Big gap, maybe more in between, but have not found yet. Catherine and Mary both baptised in Kilmeny. My main research is of the Murdoch's. Let me know if you find a connection. Regards Candy

Thank you, Alan, for the info & phonetic pronunciation - I must say that even though my own ancestry is well over 70% Scot/Irish Gaelic is not a language that comes readily, or at all, ha.
Alas, with all the Curries I have in the tree I don't yet have any of the ones you've mentioned. It seems so unlikely to me that there can be so many Curries that I'm still missing dozens of them, considering the size of Islay. But the proof of the pudding.... :) Jan

I don't think I'll be able to help with that. At that time several families would have occupied one house, and names of houses have changed over the years. I'm not sure how the numbering on Valuation Roll/Census records went.

Your message clicks with me as well. My grandmother was born on Shore Street in Bowmore as well. I see that you are a current resident of the town and so might have an answer to my query.
My grand mother was Flora McDiarmid (b. 1883 on Shore Street, Bowmore - 1960 in Saskatchewan, Canada). Her parents were Archibald McDiarmid and Agnes MacDonald. I have found the Valuation Rolls for 1885 and 1895 showing that Archibald McDiarmid
was a tenant of a building on Shore Street.
I would like to be able to identify the building in which Gramma was born. Would you be able to suggest a way to connect the Valuation Roll to a current address?
Thanks for any help you are able to provide.

Hi Philip, Your message caught my attention. I too have a number of ancestors buried in the New Church Cemetery in Bowmore as 3 of my grandparents are descended from Islay residents. If there is a set of photographs I would love to see them. You also mentioned the McFadyen family. While I have been too busy with other parts of my family trees, our line does intersect with the McFadyens. My paternal great grandparents were Donald Currie (1845 - 1904) and Catherine McFadyen (1851 - 1933). Catherine was the daughter of John McFadyen (b. 1803 in Kildalton) and Margaret McIntyre (b. Kildalton). Unfortunately that is all the information which I have. Glynn Currie Vancouver Island, Canada

Alan Cameron, do you have Duncan (b.1763) Currie’s siblings? My 3x great grandfather was Gilbert Currie (1769-1828). Gilbert married Margaret McArthur (1773-1861) from Kilchoman. Their son, Neil Currie (1811-1875), my 2x great grandfather, was born in Cairnduncan. I do not know Gilbert’s parents or his siblings.

Re: Currie / McVurich - please help
Alan Cameron
If it helps, I have some details of my Currie family. They were from Cairnduncan or CairnDonnachie which is in the Gruinard area of Islay. My grandmother was Anne Curie (1873-1954) She married John Fraser who was born and brought up in Cladadh, Portnahaven). Anne's parents were John Currie (1823-1877) and Mary Smith. John's parents were Malcolm Currie (1794-1855) and Elizabeth Ferguson (1799-1862). Malcolm's parents were Duncan Currie (1763 - ?) and Mary McCauley ( 1767 - ?). Duncan's parents were Neil McCurry(1732 -?) and Mary Ferguson.(1735-?) I have a list of descendants from Malcolm and John which may be of interest. Incidentally, I saw a recent debate about the name. It is supposed to be derived from Murchadh who was the Poet / genealogist to the Lords of the Isles. His sons would have been MacMurchadh ie (son of Murdoch) and the next generation would be macmhicmhurachidh ie the son of the son of Murdoch. Mhic is grammatically the genitive of mac and simple means of the son. In time this became Mac 'ichmhurichidh sounded machk-eech-oorich-ee) where the mh is silent and from there the mac is dropped leaving simply coor-ee and then Currie. So your Curries in Islay are descended from an ancient and important bardic family, associated with the Lords of the Isles. Alan Iain Cameron Director of Community Engagement
