Hi

I’m hoping for some help in finding a location listed in the 1881 Census for William McEwan and his wife Catherine (nee Niven/McNiven). The address listed on the 1881 transcription on Ancestry has the address as Goirteau Cottar'S Ho. I’ve tried looking at the ordnance survey maps via the National Library of Scotland website but I’m not having much luck. I would really appreciate any advice.

What can work is *writing it up!* Look at a family, or a person, note carefully the records and if you want more people to read your post -- include some images. You can screenshot some records so that only the part pertaining to your family or person is shown. Introduce the person/family, summarize the facts and supporting evidence, and explain why your ancestor is not the same person as someone with the same name in the neighboring town/county/state, or whatever the wrong "facts" are being stated without evidence. 

 

You don't need a website -- there are lots of places to post your proof statement. Your genealogy society might have a blog, or journal, or maybe it's easiest to just start up a free blog and do it there. Blogger and Wordpress are both free and easy to set up. Mine is at https://genweblog.blogspot.com/. I still get contacts from cousins from old posts! Some people even write short posts on Twitter!

I believe Archibald  emigrated first.  The rest of the family were still on Islay for the 1841 census - but in Kilchoman parish.  -  John55, Marion 50, Elizabeth 25,     Alexander 20, John 15, Donald 15, Robert 13, Catherine 10.   Plus 4 MacDearmid children:   Ann 6, Marion 4, Duncan2, and Mary 1month.   I think they were Elizabeth's children.  And I also think that the name of Alice and Elizabeth were interchangeable.

I have found a couple  of books with some info written about this family.  By all accounts the sons were big men and very musical.    All six of the sons took up land in Minto township, where they all farmed, except for John, who moved to  neighbouring Erin Township where his wife's MacLean family also settled.  A very good friend of mine is John's descendant, and he is also a strapping big and musical man.   Which of the brothers  is your ancestor?  I can give you a lot of info about any one of them, but perhaps we can leave that discussion between us, unless there are others who are interested in this particular family.

Now, back to John's father -  The Sinclairs on Islay (and much of Argyllshire) were known by the name of McNokaird (various spellings) before approx. 1750.  But they predate parish birth and marriage records, so I'm very interested to learn the source of that information which says his father was born in March of 1740.  Did Geni give his first name?  I think I have the names of all the McNokairds on Islay from old tenant lists, etc. and the names of the farms where they lived.  I'd be very interested to know John's father's name so that I can finally bridge the gap.

But I wanted to find more information on the father and mother of John Sinclair, who died in Wellington County, but is not buried there, especially about the name McNoraid. Sinclair Robinson

AND… It does no good to politely question the owner of the trees of the unsubstantiated information. They point fingers or ignore.  I even tried the blunt force – So… you have in your tree that my great great grandfather was as bigamist with 3 wives, 32 children in different states and several – even after he died.  Is it possible your information is incorrect? crickets
