Thank you. Potato famine history could be a real day brightener here in the U.S.

Just as we’re experiencing, Islay too is dealing with COVID19 life changes.  Cancellations of activities such as The Islay Sessions is an example.  However that cloud has a silver lining – have fun listening to a former “Sessioner” Fraser Ian in Back to Islay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSkNHR0kGgI&feature=youtu.be

I have a friend who works for ancestry and I asked him what difference it would make. He said ancestry has been sold several times over  the years and he doesm't think it will make any difference.

Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone knows of a way that I could purchase a copy of the book called "The People of the Parish of Jura," written by Scott Buie.

It used to be available in some locations, but a recent search hasn't turned up any results.

I ask because of my hope that there may be some further hints in the book regarding the multiple McDougald families that went to North Carolina, as well as those who stayed longer on the Isle.

Any information or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks and all the best,

Chris

I am so glad you told me this. I am having the same problem multiple files all created in Family tree maker for past 35 years and I do no know how to intergrade them to one file. Nor did I know what program to seek out capable of doing that. Is it expensive? My niece uses ancestry but they always want money of course. OK I am off to look at your file now.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info and the correction.

Sorry, as per my reply to Flora, I should have read the report generated by my genealogy program
more closely.

I have John Campbell  died 1834, most likely from a family member,  and I have no DOB for him just an "abt 1783" and my report generator took that as the actual date of birth of death and calcuated an age for him based on 1783, He could have been any age probably between 50 and 65.

In case it may help others using Famliy Tree Maker:-

I have over 250,000 folk in my family trees database and unfortunately I have had to change genealogy tree programs to cope with the large numbers and lost many sources in the transistions due to each programs differences in the GED file info they could cope with. I am currently using Rootsmagic which is the only program which would take in a native Family Tree Maker ".ftm"  file, the FTM program having given up on trying to create large GED files.

Regards

Charles MacFadyen Houston b 1943 Govan.

With my main Islay connections as:- McFadyen, Taylor,  Beaton, McArthur, Carmichael &  McLachlan.

Charles,

This long tree ties together several mini-trees I have been working on for decades.  I want to be very careful before making any merges.
Please advise the List of your source(s) for this information.
One initial question is in the snipped section below, specifically " John CAMPBELL ... was born in 1768. He was born about 1783 ... He died in 1834 at the age of 51."  Which is the correct birth year?
By the way, Chinguacousy (no q) is in Peel County.

Lorne & Susan Campbell

Hi Everyone,
Dugald Campbell, above, and his spouse relocated from Campbeltown to Giol, Islay around 1804.
Sons John and Alexander appear to have been baptized in Campbeltown.
Does anyone know why they relocated to Islay?

Better circumstances? More opportunity? Economic improvements?

Were there other Campbell siblings/families who migrated to Islay at well.?

Thank you.
Lorne

Hi Flora,

Sorry. I should have read the report generated by my genealogy program
more closely.

Dugald died bef April 1851 and my report generator took that as the date
of death and calcuated an age for him based on 1851, Seems he died
between June 1841 and April 1851 at Giol.

Thank you for the DOB corrections.

I used Alexander Campbell's place of birth as given as "the Oa" on the
1851 & 1861 Censuses.

I see he later gave it as Campeltown on the 1871 Census where he is a
farmer at Killeyan, Oa. I have changed his POB  to Campeltown.

I would be grateful if you could please tell me where you got your information on Dugald Campbell's birth and also his death at the age of 78.   Dugald Campbell was my 3 x great grandfather and in all my years of research I have never come across that information.

I would also like to advise you that Alexander Campbell was born in 1864 and not 1894.   Ann Carmichael was born in 1886 and not "about 1868".

My 2 x great grandfather Alexander Campbell was born in Campbeltown in 1803 - not the Oa.
