I am so glad you told me this. I am having the same problem multiple files all created in Family tree maker for past 35 years and I do no know how to intergrade them to one file. Nor did I know what program to seek out capable of doing that. Is it expensive? My niece uses ancestry but they always want money of course. OK I am off to look at your file now.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the info and the correction.

Sorry, as per my reply to Flora, I should have read the report generated by my genealogy program
more closely.

I have John Campbell  died 1834, most likely from a family member,  and I have no DOB for him just an "abt 1783" and my report generator took that as the actual date of birth of death and calcuated an age for him based on 1783, He could have been any age probably between 50 and 65.

In case it may help others using Famliy Tree Maker:-

I have over 250,000 folk in my family trees database and unfortunately I have had to change genealogy tree programs to cope with the large numbers and lost many sources in the transistions due to each programs differences in the GED file info they could cope with. I am currently using Rootsmagic which is the only program which would take in a native Family Tree Maker ".ftm"  file, the FTM program having given up on trying to create large GED files.

Regards

Charles MacFadyen Houston b 1943 Govan.

With my main Islay connections as:- McFadyen, Taylor,  Beaton, McArthur, Carmichael &  McLachlan.

Charles,

This long tree ties together several mini-trees I have been working on for decades.  I want to be very careful before making any merges.
Please advise the List of your source(s) for this information.
One initial question is in the snipped section below, specifically " John CAMPBELL ... was born in 1768. He was born about 1783 ... He died in 1834 at the age of 51."  Which is the correct birth year?
By the way, Chinguacousy (no q) is in Peel County.

Lorne & Susan Campbell

Hi Everyone,
Dugald Campbell, above, and his spouse relocated from Campbeltown to Giol, Islay around 1804.
Sons John and Alexander appear to have been baptized in Campbeltown.
Does anyone know why they relocated to Islay?

Better circumstances? More opportunity? Economic improvements?

Were there other Campbell siblings/families who migrated to Islay at well.?

Thank you.
Lorne

Hi Flora,

Sorry. I should have read the report generated by my genealogy program
more closely.

Dugald died bef April 1851 and my report generator took that as the date
of death and calcuated an age for him based on 1851, Seems he died
between June 1841 and April 1851 at Giol.

Thank you for the DOB corrections.

I used Alexander Campbell's place of birth as given as "the Oa" on the
1851 & 1861 Censuses.

I see he later gave it as Campeltown on the 1871 Census where he is a
farmer at Killeyan, Oa. I have changed his POB  to Campeltown.

I would be grateful if you could please tell me where you got your information on Dugald Campbell's birth and also his death at the age of 78.   Dugald Campbell was my 3 x great grandfather and in all my years of research I have never come across that information.

I would also like to advise you that Alexander Campbell was born in 1864 and not 1894.   Ann Carmichael was born in 1886 and not "about 1868".

My 2 x great grandfather Alexander Campbell was born in Campbeltown in 1803 - not the Oa.

Many of you won’t recognize Jack Puttenham’s name.  In the early days of the SCT-ISLAY list, as a volunteer librarian at the Hamilton Family History Centre, Jack transcribed all the available Islay BMDs and freely shared them.  A monumental task that helped so many.  I still have the hard copies of those transcriptions and even though the OPRs are available online, I still refer to Jack’s research.  The print outs fill a 3” binder!

Jack was a kind and generous person and a GenAngel to many of us.

RIP Jack.

In sympathy to his family and to Lorne and Susan Campbell who I believe are still members of the Islay list.

PUTTENHAM, John Henry “Jack”
Saturday, October 8th, 1927 - Saturday, June 6th, 2020
Jack Puttenham passed away peacefully at Extendicare Hamilton on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at the age of 92. Predeceased by his beloved wife Ann Puttenham nee Campbell (2011). Loving father of Valerie Puttenham. Jack will be dearly missed by his extended family and friends. Jack had many varied interests including but not limited to science, technology, news/current events and particularly classical and jazz music and opera. He was also keenly involved in genealogy and was a volunteer librarian at the Hamilton Family History Centre for several years. He worked in the jewellery industry, at the Royal Connaught Hotel, and most notably at Stelco where he worked as a First Class Stationary Engineer up until his retirement in 1988. After he retired he said that you never get a day off. He was very much a great storyteller with a quick wit and a people person - genuinely interested in all people. He enjoyed watching the Hamilton Tiger Cats play. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment at Boston Mills Cemetery. In memory of Jack, those wishing to make a donation are asked to consider the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cancer Assistance Program, Neighbour to Neighbour, Royal Botanical Gardens or a registered charity of your choice.

Re: Tried at Islay

it may be as simple as that the courthouse was on the island of Islay.

Donald Young

Throughout this season, there have been some observations that we wish to share with you in this letter as they don’t all connect specifically with expectations on the review form.  We are bringing the following concerns to your attention with the hope that we may be able to help you develop strategies to resolve them.

Subject: [Islay] Tried at Islay

My niece investigated the Inveraray Jail records and found my great-great-grandfather John Kennedy “tried at Islay” for assault and breach of the peace on 11th February 1880, and sentenced to 60 days imprisonment.  (He had a previous conviction.)

Does anyone have any idea why he would have been “tried at Islay”?

His wife was tried on 17th February (for assault by stabbing) by Sheriff Campion and jury, and sentenced to 21 days imprisonment.

I believe the technical term is a “domestic”.

The jail records can be searched at the bottom of this page https://www.inverarayjail.co.uk/our-history/

Obituary
Saturday October 8th, 1927 – Saturday, June 6th, 2020

Tried at Islay

Seymour Hosking

Hi Russ,

The username is helloplanet2000. You took the Big Y test as well? I also took a Big Y test and have found that most of my close matches are actually MacLeans (various spellings).

I do have autosomal matches with McDougalls on Jura back to the early 1700s, so my MacLean overlap likely happens before any established records. Still, it is fun to learn more.

All the best,

Chris

Hi Russ,

I am sorry, but I don't have anything for you just yet in regards to the McLeans and McGilvrays. I did note in the 1901 census of Canada it lists Hector and James as living with their family, but I haven't pieced this part of my tree together very well just yet.

The Mary McGillivray in my tree is believed to have been from Islay, but some of the other McGilvrays that went to the Nottawasaga area came from Jura, like my third great grandparents and their family. I went through my copies of the Jura parish records, and the McGillivrays seemed to drop off the map, so to speak, in the 1830s. If it was anything like my ancestors, they moved to Islay to have a better chance to board a ship destined for Canada.

Okay, after reviewing my DNA Matches on Ancestry, there is one who has a high number of McGilvrays from Islay, with some going to Simcoe County. This person's tree has Malcolm married to Ann, and two of their children are Malcolm and Bessie. There seems to be some speculation in regards to Malcolm (the father's) siblings and where/when they died. I believe that Mary is actually the sister of Malcolm, though I haven't been able to connect everything just yet.

This person's tree on Ancestry shows an Ann, born 1794, as another sister to Malcolm. They have the date of death correct as 1872, but didn't list the marriage to Alexander McLellan.

This sounds like an interesting path to follow further.

All the best,

Chris

Malcolm and Bessie were siblings, children of Malcolm McGIlvray and Ann McCoag who came to Nottawasaga with most of their family in 1855. Have you determined the exact relationship between the boys and these McGilvrays?

The obvious connection would be if Ann and Malcolm Sr. were siblings. But I place Malcolm Sr. in the family of Donald McGilvray and Ann Ferguson. While he has a sister Ann, that Ann married Alexander McLellan and remained on Islay until her death in 1872. Her parentage is confirmed in the civil death registration.

Hi Jeanette,

Like Dorothy, I have Gillespie and Bell in my tree.

I don't have an Ann McGillivray, but I do have a Mary McGillivray, born approx. 1799, who married a John Allan McLean, born approx. 1803. This family moved to Nottawasaga, Ontario, along with my direct line ancestors.

All the best,

I'm a bit late to join in the roll call but am interested in finding others with interests in these families:

Gillespie & Bell

John Gillespie b. Abt 1777 m. Catherine Bell b. Abt 1805

They moved to Canada.

No good info on their parents. Speculate maybe John Bell and Catherine McNiven as Catherine's parents but other trees attribute other parents to her.

White & McGillivray (and McDermid, Heyman)

John White b. Abt 1811 m. in 1830 Ann McGillivray b. Abt 1803

In marriage record John in Skibba and Ann in Ellister

They moved to Canada.

John White possible father, living with him in 1841 census:

James White b. Abt 1851 Kilchoman, d. 1856 Ballymenach, parents Finlay White and Jane Heyman

Possible sisters (daughters of James White): Catherine White m. Donald McIntyre and Flora White m. Duncan McIntyre (brothers)

Possible sisters to Ann McGillivray: Mary m. Alexander Jamieson and Effy (Euphemia) m. James McIntyre

Possible mother to Ann McGillivray: Euphemia Effy McTaggart (not sure that's her maiden name); she's living with possible sister Mary in 1851 (Mary's mother)

Glad this mailing list is still going!

I know there are a lot of McGillivray researchers in particular on this list, so hoping to make some progress on that family if I can.
