Allan had a sister Janet MacDougall b 1785 d 1855 who married a Donald Sinclair at Bowmore in 1834. He seems to have died before June 1841. Janet had two sons after the marriage but may have had six other children before that as Janet is living with some other older sons & daughters on the 1841/1851 censuses. She is shown as a farmer at Island Farm, Bowmore in 1851 and in 1841 at Mulindra she was an Agric Labourer. Allan had 5 of his 8 children at Mulindra.

Larachaluil is clearly shown on the Ordnance Survey 1878 survey (old).
I've attached the modern aerial view which appears to show the walls of the buildings but no roofs.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to say thank you to the people who reached out to me in regards to my first message, as it helped to virtually meet a distant cousin, and helped to solidify a lead that my fourth great grandfather's dad was Angus McDugald. Thank you!

Angus looks to have been born around 1753 in Bowmore, and he married Mary McFaidain (McFadyen I believe) in January of 1778 in Kilarrow. Looking over the parish records for that time, it looks like there were three other men with the same spelling of the last name, showing as McDugald. They are listed as Lachlan McDugald, Dun (short for Duncan?) McDugald and Jo (short for John?) McDugald. I am speculating that this group of four individuals were brothers, or at least related, as they are the only four with the last name spelled in this fashion.

Dun married a Margaret King in December of 1776, Jo married an Isabell Brown in January of 1781, and Lachlan married Sarah McDugald in July of 1773. There may have also been an Alexander McDugald, who was married to a Marion McFadian. They are listed as having a child named Christian in 1771.

Any information that someone may have in regards to these individuals is greatly appreciated.

Also, if you know of anyone who is a male MacDougall (various spellings included) whose family has maintained the name throughout their history (carried through the male line), the Clan MacDougall DNA project has begun to generate some momentum, and is offering a free general Y-DNA test to male MacDougalls who wish to take part (at least for the time being). Their website is macdougalldna.org.

Were you aware that Angus had two sisters called Mary. The first born Edinburgh 23/6/1827, the second born Glasgow 29/5/1830.

 Through DNA testing, I see that I have a great many relatives in Ireland.  I suspect that my McAulays may have come from Ireland and later emigrated to Islay.  My great grandfather Angus spoke Scots Gaelic, played the bagpipe (probably much to the chagrin of his neighbors) and was married by a Free Church minister in Glasgow.    

If anyone knows anything about Duncan and the children from is first marriage, I would love to hear from you.

How does this grab you?


The Jean (10) living with Duncan in the 1851 Census was a neice born in Glasgow.

A Jean was born to Gilbert McAulay & Jean McDermid in Glasgow on 1/4/1840.

Gilbert (a wright) & Jean were married in Glasgow on 7/9/1832 by the Gaelic Minister of the Gorbals (suggesting, to me, that they came from the Islands).

In the 1841 Census there is a family Gilbert a 40 year old wright, Jean at 30, Elizabeth 3 & Jean 1 living in Brownfields Parish. Elizabeth was born in Glasgow on 11/5/1836. As yet, cannot find the family in the 1851 Census.

In the 1851 Census I have an Angus McAulay, with a 13 year old neice Elizabeth, born in Glasgow, living with him.

So could these two neices be the children of Gilbert & Jean, each living with one of their Father's brothers????

I have Angus being born at Laggan, Islay around 1799 (based on age at death on 2/4/1888), although he was married in Kilchoman and his children were born in both Kilchoman & Portnahaven. Angus' known children were Gilbert, John, Duncan, Donald & Alexander.

Angus' parents were John McAulay & Ann Shaw.

I left Greenock Scotland in 1962 now reside in Kent England. My son lives in Syracue Utah, so I have been to Idaho a couple of times.


I tried all the names you gave with Duncan but got nil returns, although I believe I found Angus and his wife. I have always taken Scotland's People as the authoratitive source of all official scottish records, it will be interested in seeing their response to my query.


If you have something on Duncan around 1861 that is good news. Prior to 1855 death records are few and far between. In the 1851 info you sent Duncan is shown as 60, so at 1861 he would be 70ish, at that age I would have thought he was too old to undertake long voyages

Just out of curiosity, where are you located. I live in the state of Idaho, USA. (Not that it makes any difference.) I could not find Duncan in the 1851 census either. I mentioned this to a friend I had made in Scotland through the research I was doing and he provided me with what I sent to you. I got the information from Ancestry. I don't know why it's not on ScotlandsPeople.

I still haven't figured out what happened to Duncan. I'm assuming that he emigrated somewhere, maybe Australia or New Zealand. If he stayed in Scotland there should be some record. I haven't found any records about Duncan beyond the 1861 census and it doesn't make sense.
If I find anything, I'll let you know
