Re: Roll Call ?

Hi Diane: Thank you for all your work with the group! I have wonderful memories of our get togethers in Ontario and Islay. My gr-grandfather, John McNabb was born on Islay in 1842. He immigrated to Ontario before 1865. His sister, Martha married Archibald Currie in Glasgow in 1866. (Arch was also from Islay.) Their daughter, Kate, was born in January 1867 and supposedly learned to walk on the ship to Ontario about 1869. A "cousin" just helped me locate their brother, Colin, who also eventually ended up in Ontario with their parents, John and Cathrine. Before living in Port Ellen, John and Cathrine lived in Ballychatrigan and Lyrabus. I believe John's parents were Alexander McNabb and Martha Campbell. Not sure about Cathrine.
John's and Martha's families both ended up in Chicago and many members are buried there. Colin and the parents died in Ontario. This is John and his wife Margaret Galloway (born in Ontario). I assume this is their son, John, although they had a daughter, Martha, first.

Hi, everyone.

There are now 177 of us here. Would you like to start a roll call? Just the Islay people's names and places you are interested in.

I am thinking we can also build up a database for the people we are researching.

We can post images too - however - there is an overall size limit for images on free lists here. So be cautious and resize them, please.  I would love to see photos of those we know came from Islay, if we have them.

I have been wondering whether there are now enough of us who have done DNA tests that we can put our details together to prove our descent.

Remind me where I can see your family tree.  My Catherine McArthur was baptised Bowmore in 1808.

regards Seymour

Alan Cameron

Hi
My name is Alan Cameron and I have many family connections in Islay. My mother was Mary Fraser, her sister Annie Fraser and their brother Iain Fraser. They were born and brought up in Ardbeg where their father John Fraser worked at the Distillery. They lived in Wembley Cottage Ardbeg. Ian was a gamekeeper at Farkin, Kildalton and latterly Dunlossit. Their grandfather was William Fraser who came from Boleskine on Loch Ness side and was a sheered. His wife was Peggy McFadyen. he had many brothers and sisters and her parents were Finlay McFadyen and Mary McGillivray. Finlay's father was Charlie McFadyen and the came from the Claddah area of Portnahaven.

My grandmother Annie Fraser (ms Currie) was one of a large family of Curries who originated in Carnduncan  (Kilchoman). She had a brother John whose sons - Malcolm (Calum) and Donald farmed in the Ballygrant /. PortAskaig area - Donald at Finlaggan and Calum at Esknish
Annie my granny's father was John Currie and he married Mary Smith. There are still Smith farmers in the Bowmore area. There was a large family of Curries whom I can trace. John's father was Malcolm and his wife Elizabeth Ferguson.

If  any of these families are familiar, I would,d be happy to share my information.

Alan I Cameron

My complicated Islay family

Goodness knows how to put photos on the links, however here are my great grandparents  Donald Gillies and Ann McKewan (brewer at Laphroaig)   The Carson children of Catherine Ann Gillies, who married William Carson, photographed on the last photo, with her sister Margaret Gilles who was the mother of Alaistair Woodrow  who partnered with his cousin, May Carson, my grandmother.  Bit twisted.  Margaret, my great grandmother was also my great aunt, and went to Canada.

Re: Roll Call ?

John Kemplen

Hi all,

Happy to share my info in case a roll call is set up.

Names of interest are McKellar, Campbell, McLugash, McArthur.

People moved around a lot; places include Kilbrannan (near Daill), Torrabus, Tighnaspeur (a.k.a. Sky House, in Kildalton parish but nowhere near anywhere), Ardilistry, Cnocrhaonisdale, Trudernish, Proaig, Ayen, Kilchiaran and, most recently, Auchnaclach between Keills and Ballygrant.

Ancestors of both grandmother and grandfather moved to Islay (separately) in the 1840s, when many people were moving out.

Regards

John
