Since we have had Curries as a subject lately - Below are the transcribed Kilchoman marriages for Currie (men). I have claimed the couples of Duncan Currie /Janet McNiven, Hugh Currie / Mary Bell, Malcolm Currie/ Catherine McCannell, Neil Currie/Christena McNiven and Peter Currie/Jean McNiven - as sons of Gilbert Currie and Margaret McArthur. Some of them I have proof and some I don't. I have found trees on ancestry that vary from my choices.
My question is - Has anyone on this list claimed any of these couples as belonging to their ancestor line or knowledge of the Currie parents? Thanks, Lynn

While the topic on the Curries is hot thought I would like to put in my interest in the Curries . Dugald Currie b abt 1807 , Kildalton and wife Jane Buie b abt 1811 , Jura . Daughters Flora and Isabella emigrated to New Zealand, then Dugald , Jane , Alexander and Margaret arrived New Zealand 1877. Eldest son John died Islay 1874 . Mystery is a son Donald died in Invercargill , New Zealand 22 April 1917 Notes from death certificate death certificate 1917/1733. Donald married in America at the age of 26 yrs. His wife was Christina Morrison (surname hard to read) and she was deceased at the time of his death . He had been in New Zealand 4 yrs .Said to have 6 children living in America. Informant John Fraser, Undertaker His birth date was taken from the 1860 Census listed as being 15 yrs. His age at death was given as 58 yrs making his birth date 1859. Valuation Rolls
In 1905 my great grandfather was living on Shore Street in Bowmore, Islay. On the Valuation Roll for 1905 he is listed consecutively after the Temperance Hotel.
Is it a reasonable hypothesis to suggest that he was living next door to the hotel? Would that same hypothesis apply if he were to live further from the hotel, say 8 or 10 units away? Hello Toni and Janet: There is a possibility that my Mary Currie born 1794 ( per tombstone) could be the Mary born 1787 above. Especially since we believe her mother was a Sinclair, and I have the dna connections to Janet and her cousins. I just wish I had better proof. Anne Goeden

Hi Toni long time since I heard from you. Yes that is right, also when my Dad visited Islay over 25 years ago, someone told him that his branch of the Curries got caught in a Church, escaped and changed their name to Currie. How much truth I do not know.
Alexander Currie and his wife Mary Buie from Jura 2 oldest children named John born about 1820 and Alexander about1823. One of them as a small child fell into the fire and passed away. The other died in a snowstorm with his cousin. Would anyone have any idea of that?

So, if we used the traditional naming pattern, Donald's parents names might be "Iver Curry" and "Mary". Thus, Katherine's parents might be "Alexander Sinclair" and "Katherine". I know that is just speculative, BUT, Alexander Sinclair did live at Daill farm in the late 1790s, and his wife's name was Katherine. "Iver" is a very unusual first name, certainly for Islay Sinclairs, so I suggest that the name is probably a Currie forename. (just doing a quick google of Iver Curry + Argyllshire, I see that the name might have changed to "Edward", a more anglicized version. I saw the name "Iver Curry" on the mainland of Argyllshire in a couple of places. Just thought it might help. Toni (PS - Hi Janet! I think we corresponded a few years ago. And Roger! ....many more years ago. Yikes! Anyway, it's nice to be back.)

Hi Jane,
It took me a little while to figure out this statement, but the way I read
it is that it was Donald Currie who died on the moors in 1856 and is buried in
Kilchoman graveyard, stone not found.

1856 Donald Currie, Agricultural Labourer, married son of Farmer, Archibald
Currie and wife (unknown to his son Archibald Currie), missing on Kinigary Moor
or Hill for 16 days was found dead on Kinigary Moor on the 24th February aged 70
years and is buried in Kilchoman churchyard as certified by his son Archibald
Currie and registered on the 28th February by John Taylor, Bowmore.
I have read all the visible monuments in Kilchoman graveyard and the only
one credited to a Duncan Currie I have attached, unfortunately the inscription
was unable to be read apart from the words Donald Currie but even this stone is
a leap of faith if it is to be the same chappie. It is the word ‘By’ that
is the key. Hmmmm the plot continues.

My Donald Currie born about 1768 Bowmore married Catherine Sinclair 4 Feb 1786. Roger McWee told me years ago no one knew who his father is, and if found out I would be told. In my tree I put his father as John Currie question mark.

My Donald Currie born about 1768 Bowmore married Catherine Sinclair 4 Feb 1786. Roger McWee told me years ago no one knew who his father is, and if found out I would be told. In my tree I put his father as John Currie question mark.
