My Islay ancestry goes back to Alexander McCaog 1761-1843 (various spellings) and Flora McNeil 1776-1836, both of Bowmore (married 29 Mar 1789 at Bowmore) via Colin, illegitimate son their son Lachlan and Catherine McArthur “a native of Kildalton”.

I have been wondering whether there are now enough of us who have done DNA tests that we can put our details together to prove our descent.

Remind me where I can see your family tree.  My Catherine McArthur was baptised Bowmore in 1808.

Thanks very much, Iain,

I will upload this.

If not too big, I will add a column for DNA Gedmatch users and a column for family tree locations e.g. FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, if applicable. I am going to recheck our privacy rules first.

Then members can go in and add to it or change e-mail addresses, etc.

So good to see my mailbox full of Islay people!

I am thinking we can also build up a database for the people we are researching.

We can post images too - however - there is an overall size limit for images on free lists here. So be cautious and resize them, please.  I would love to see photos of those we know came from Islay, if we have them.

Dear All,
My link with Islay - my great grandmother and the main family name I am following is Campbell (they sometimes listed on their certificates that they were Campbell (McIvor)) - I'm not sure why or the significance of this and any information would be interesting thank you :-)

Great grandmother was Margaret Campbell B:Jan 1974 Bowmore Islay M: George McLean Stewart (non Islay person)  D: Feb 1931 Larkhall Glasgow
Her parents (both from Islay my G G grandparents) were: Duncan Campbell B: 1831 D: 1910 and Marion McKay B: 1837 D: 1885
GGG Grandparents Archibald Campbell B: 1771 Islay D: abt 1850 and Mary McIntyre B: about 1773 D: ?
GGG Grandparents McKay side - Hugh Mckay b: 1815 D: 1885 and Janet Johnstone B: 1817 D: 1885

My sister and I have both completed our DNA via Ancestry we were both born in Glasgow but moved to NZ in our late 20's.
We've made connections with our Australian Campbell's cousins. And my gran had a photo (from her mum) of their father - which we now have (they have a copy and had sent it to either my great granny Margraet or her family in Islay).

We are looking forward to finding more connections.

Cheers,
Cheryl :-)

Hi Iain and all

It seems that I’m not on the original spreadsheet of Islay researchers.

I’m searching for the parents of my g-grandfather Archibald CURRIE who was born on Islay about 1839.

He immigrated to Oro Township, Ontario, and in 1871 married Flora GALRAITH, dau of Neil GALBRAITH (b Islay 1811) and Mary McEACHERN.  The Ontario marriage registration shows his parents as James and Lizzie.  We haven’t found them anywhere.

Carolyn,

I think we’ve talked before, but just in case ….

My McNabbs were also on Ballychatrigin from before 1800 to about 1852.  I can not match any of the persons you list below, although there are some in my data without enough evidence to rule in/out.

Some of mine also went on from Ontario to Chicago.

Hi Diane: Thank you for all your work with the group! I have wonderful memories of our get togethers in Ontario and Islay. My gr-grandfather, John McNabb was born on Islay in 1842. He immigrated to Ontario before 1865. His sister, Martha married Archibald Currie in Glasgow in 1866. (Arch was also from Islay.) Their daughter, Kate, was born in January 1867 and supposedly learned to walk on the ship to Ontario about 1869. A "cousin" just helped me locate their brother, Colin, who also eventually ended up in Ontario with their parents, John and Cathrine. Before living in Port Ellen, John and Cathrine lived in Ballychatrigan and Lyrabus. I believe John's parents were Alexander McNabb and Martha Campbell. Not sure about Cathrine.

John's and Martha's families both ended up in Chicago and many members are buried there. Colin and the parents died in Ontario. This is John and his wife Margaret Galloway (born in Ontario). I assume this is their son, John, although they had a daughter, Martha, first.
