Re: Larachaluil
Hi there
Larachaluil is clearly shown on the Ordnance Survey 1878 survey (old). I've attached the modern aerial view which appears to show the walls of the buildings but no roofs. Here's a link The Oa - Larachaluil regards Seymour

Re: McDougall Islay Connections,-resonding to Chris MacDougall
Chas Houston <cmcfhouston@...>
Allan had a sister Janet MacDougall b 1785 d 1855 who married a Donald Sinclair at Bowmore in 1834. He seems to have died before June 1841. Janet had two sons after the marriage but may have had six other children before that as Janet is living with some other older sons & daughters on the 1841/1851 censuses. She is shown as a farmer at Island Farm, Bowmore in 1851 and in 1841 at Mulindra she was an Agric Labourer. Allan had 5 of his 8 children at Mulindra.

Many thanks to Marion and Charles for their responses! This will lead me further in my research, as some of the surnames listed are ones that I have identified DNA matches with, but had had difficulty in establishing their connections. With any luck, I may be able to establish those links now. Thanks again! Stay safe, stay well! Chris

Re: Roll Call ?
javankrona@...
Well hello, I just found this group and as it appears this thread is a roll call, I will add my quest.
I am tracing the McArthur’s from Islay, particularly those sailing with Capt. Laughlin Campbell as part of the Argyle Patent. I had for the longest time been at a loss in trying from my lineage, James Law McArthur b. 22July1859 in Lachute, Quebec. I have since stumbled upon the history of the Argyle Patent. With my known history ending in Lachute, Quebec, I believe my family will be in the lineage of Peter (Patrick) McArthur b. 1705 in Islay and Mary McDougal also of Islay, sailing with Laughlin Campbell in 1738 on the Happy Return. I am tracing this line independently, hoping that I will find the link between my family in Quebec and this one from Islay. From this Peter McArthur 1705 Islay, I believe my line with come through Charles McArthur b. 1730 in Islay, also sailing with his parents and two siblings in 1738. Arriving in New York, Settling in Livingston Manor, NY before the Argyle Patent was finally allotted in 1764. From Charles, I expect the line to continue through Peter McArthur b.1760 in New York who married Phebe Lane in Jericho, VT in 1782, making their way to Saint Andrews, Quebec in 1795. I know by the time Phebe Lane McArthur passed in 1852 she had over 200 living descendants. So yes, I find it very probably I will eventually be able to make a definite link to this family in Quebec.

The McArthurs are my stumbling block.
I am stuck because there is a huge mix up between the McArthurs and the Kennedys (in my line), so I will watch the replies carefully. Allan

Hi.
I am from Renfrew in Scotland. Lived in NZ many years. Belonged to the old SCT-Islay list for years and found it invaluable. Main interest is Logan family but other names are Livingstone - Torrie - Carmichael - McKay My Isaly connection starts my GG Duncan Logan born 1875 and died Emerivale 1958 who left Islay as a young man about 1900 and returned on retirement. Going backwards we have .. Donald Logan 1851-1940 Duncan Logan 1811-1879 James Logan 1782-1861 Robert Logan - dates unknown. Probably born about 1750. I think Robert and brothers(?) David and John may have come to Islay late 1700's from Antrim - or Ayrshire - or Campsie. Happy to share anything I have with Islay connections. John Shaw Auckland NZ

Hi,
My name is Michael Collins. I live in New Zealand. I have been researching my family from Islay since the mid 1990s. My family from Isaly are: Duncan Sinclair and Margaret MacDougall. Their son: Duncan Sinclair (1782-1879) of Oa who married Mary MacGibbon (1800-91) daughter of Hector MacGibbon and Janet Blue. Duncan and Mary Sinclair's son John Sinclair( 1835-1932) migrated to New Zealand in 1860. He is my GG Grandfather. My DNA profile is on Gedmatch: M645852 and M143149. I also have a presence on FTDNA and 23andme.com. I have family trees on Ancestry.com and Myheritage.com. I look forward to connecting with potential distant cousins with an aim of making some headway in our shared heritage which I am sure most on this site will admit is challenging. Kind regards Michael

Hello Michael, I am descended from a Mary Sinclair 1775 - 1853 who married Alexander Campbell. Her father was John Sinclair b abt 1740 married to Catherine McCuaig abt 1755-1811. I looked at our shared DNA M645852, the biggest porttion was only 4cms on CHR 12. Interestingly when I look at my DNA links on DNA painter I find that I have links from <1m - 12M as Campbell/Sinclairs. And you fit within that larger portion. Hope that makes some kind of sense to you. As I am not expert on the tehn terms. Unfortunately an error came up on M143149 My Ged No is A768704. Let me know what you think Johan

Old Bowmore circa 1910
I hope this photograph is visible to others. I posted it to the Old Islay group on Facebook.
Many people said it helped them think of where their ancestors had walked.

Islay people - McNeill, McDermid, Currie, McGilvray, Ferguson (2 branches who intermarried, just to make it more interesting, lol).
Places: Bowmore, Portnahaven. Our link to Islay - my husband's grandmother - left for North America in December 1907. She never returned to Scotland.

Fabulous photo! If I'm deducing correctly from the map, this is taken at the harbour looking up Main Street. This was taken within a couple of years of my husband's grandmother leaving Islay so gives us an indepth sense of what Bowmore looked like as she grew up. If only we had a photo of her as a young woman, we'd really be able to 'see' her here. Thanks for sharing.

Seymour - your lovely photo is already in our album. (Now several copies though.) I'll make it a cover photo later today. It's nice to have a few to change periodically. Members must agree to be public in the directory. Few have done that. (I can see you all though.) There's a link to 'Contact Group Owner' at the bottom of every e-mail. You can add me to your address book if you like as: diane_rogers@... I'm pretty open on the web :-) Diane M Diane Rogers, Admin

Re: Roll Call ?

Hi Janice
One of my Islay connection is via my gr-grandfather Archibald CURRIE who was born there about 1840. He came to Canada in 1865, per the 1901 Ontario Census. In 1871 he married Flora GALBRAITH ( born in Ontario) in Oro Township, Simcoe County, ON. The marriage registration gives his parents names as James and Lizzie. Archie and Flora had 8 children including my grandmother Lizzie.
The only possible find for him in Scotland was this:
"Transcription of the 1841 Census of Kilmeny, Islay, Scotland, LDS film 101812" Parish, Place, First Name, Surname, Sex, Age, Occupation, Place of birth Kilmeny, ,Keppols, James, Currie, Male, 35, Tailor, ARY Kilmeny, ,Keppols, Elizabeth, Currie, Fem, 35 ARY
Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Neil, McDermid, Male, 40, Ag. Lab., Born Elsewhere Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Jean, McDermid, Fem, 40, Born Elsewhere Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Peter, McDermid, Male, 19, Born Elsewhere Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Charles, McDermid, Male, 10, ARY Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Catherine, McDermid, Fem, 8, ARY Kilmeny, ,Shinghart, Archibald, Currie, Male, 4, ARY
I don’t this McDermid family.
Do you know of my CURRIE family ?
