Thanks Annette. It is always good to meet new people like this. You are right about being a small world, but it amazes me how such a small island as Islay could be home to so many people around the world. Three of my grandparents are descended from there.

I have not done a DNA test, but my earliest Currie ancestor would be  Archibald Currie and Elizabeth Montgomery.

I would be happy to exchange information with your friend though.

Hi Anne,

FYI

I have a McNab/Gilchrist connection:

William Gilchrist's

daughter, Margaret, born Islay, 20 Jul 1831, married John McNab

William and family came to Simcoe area around 1833 I believe. Don't have much more information on Margaret's branch of the tree, but thought it might be of interest.

Cheers,

Hello Shelly,

I caught your post where you mentioned that you were researching the Argyle Patent. I have been researching this topic for a number of years with my focus on Alexander Montgomery and his wife Ann Sutherland. My Montgomerys came from Kilchoman as did Alexander and I have been working to make the connection. I have several pieces of reference materials that may be helpful in your search. What surnames are you seeking? I am very involved in GEDmatch and may be able to help you there.

Heather,

What is your Gedmatch number. Also, you can upload to FTDNA, My Heritage and Gedmatch from any platform. Beware, Ancestry tests different segments than the other platforms, so you can get wildly varying results. It’s advisable to test on at least two platforms at upload both kits to Gedmatch to combine for one master kit. Then you are sure to hit all of your matches.

Then there's a tab where you can see our relatives in common, who would also be from the same lineages. I've found several now who are descended from the Gilchrists of Oa, Ancestry seems to have more of us. Through Flora's knowledge, I have seen that I have more 3rd and 4th cousins still on Islay than anywhere else in the world! DNA has been a great help to me!

Islay on UTube

A while ago I watched a UTube series on the Clans of Scotland on TV, and was delighted to see one episode that included a bit on Islay.  There's a view of downtown Bowmore, and also a short interview with Dr. David Caldwell about the MacDonald, Lords of the Isles.  I was able to find it on my computer as follows:
"UTube + Scottish Clans + MacDonald". There are 3 short segments (about 10 minutes each), all interesting, but the part I'm referring to is in the second segment.
Good for the soul!

Family's from Islay

Malcolm Brown

Hi, I am researching the names Brown, McLeod, McIntyre, & McKenzie. My Great Grandmother Jennie (Jane) (Janet) Brown born 28 Feb. 1852 went to public school in Port Ellen. Her mother Catherine McLeod (b. abt. 1828 Balmorie) and father Peter Brown (d. 1865 Bombay, India). Jennie had a brother who stayed there and married Annie Gardner.
Jennie moved to the US and then to Ontario, Canada where she married John Brown (I assume not related) who was also from Islay (b. 15 May 1849 Kilchoman).
John's parents were Donald Brown & Margaret McIntyre. His Grandparents were Alexander Brown & Mary McKenzie.
I there a list of who went to the Port Ellen public school around 1857 to 1860?

Re: My Islay gt gt grandmother

Hello Heather,  My g-g grandfather was John Gilchrist, b 1816 Upper Cragabus to Neil Gilchrist and Catherine Sinclair.  Neil was born 1778, the Oa, d. 1838, Fracdale.  Catherine was born 1779, the O, and died 1862, Port Ellen.  John had a younger brother, Archibald, b. 20 June 1819, Lower Cragabus, and a a younger still sister, Marion, b. 13 May 1822, Upper Cragabus.  I have not additional information re. the siblings Archibald and Marion, other than the 1841 census for "Frackle" (Fracdale).  It lists John 24 yrs., and Archibald 20, Hand Loom Weaver, living in the household of their mother Catherine, 60, Agricultural Laborer.  Also listed in Fracdale, in the household of William and Mary Campbell, are Marion Gilchrist, 18, and a Duncan Gilchrist, 14, as well as an Archibald Campbell, 7, son of William and Mary Campbell.
My g-g-grandfather John Gilchrist married Ann Kerr and had 10 children, including 4 boys; two Duncans (one died young), Neil, and John - no Archibalds.
Anyway, I suspect that we are related somehow.  Maybe my g-g-g grandfather Neil Gilchrist, b. 1778, had a brother Archibald.
