Re: Islay Researchers

hi Iain
it appears that I'm not on the list. my research interests are Peter GILCHRIST (1790-1855) from Kildalton and his wife Mary BROWN (1789-1874) my 3x great grandparents. I'm descended through their daughter Margaret GILCHRIST (c1832-1893). this is part of my grandfather's branch also another branch of my family on my grandmother's side were FERGUSON who I've been unable to positively prove on paper. just stories from my grandmother about John Ferguson (born about 1800), her great grandfather, who was from Islay. his boat sank while he was fishing and he washed up on the Antrim coast, and stayed in Ireland. I don't know who his parents were so probably will forever remain a mystery. thank you Marcia Stancer |

Hi Paul, I have been researching my McAulay family in Islay. My GreatGrandmother, Jean McAulay, was born on 28/11/1828, in the parish of Kilchoman at the location "Portnahaven" and died on 19/10/1891 in Greenock, Renfrewshire. She had 3 brothers, Duncan (b1821 d 1887), Donald (b 1823 d 1849), Gilbert (b 1824, d 1912) and 1 sister Janet (b 1826 d 1849). All from Portnahaven but the familymoved to Garnkirk Lanarkshire by the time of the 1841 Census. Without earlier records for Kilchoman parish, there may have been other children but who knows?? Jean's parents were Alexander McAulay (b 1782 d 1860) & Jean MacPhaiden (b 1787 d 1871), both dying in Garnkirk. I have been able to identify a sister of Alexander, Jean (b 1789 d 1869) who married a Hugh Campbell. According to Alexander's death record his parents were Gilbert McAulay & Janet Robertson. In the 1811 Tenant's list there is a Gilbert McAulay at No.4 Portnahven. I have been scouring the Islay records for McAulays and have listed quite a few of them for the late 1700s, but with no Parish records before the early 1820s and no death records before 1855 it is proving impossible to link any of the names to establish families. I cannot say that I have your Duncan in my sights as he left Islay quite early on and McAulay is a relatively common name in Scotland, particularly in Ross & Cromarty and around Glasgow. Regards Mike Not much help so far, but we are in the same location on a similar timeline, so there might be a connection.

My search since for Flora Keith has not proved fruitful. Can anyone send me in the right direction?

James Gilchrist and Ann Calder, both born Islay, are my 3rd great grandparents. I am descended from their daughter Margaret and Donald Carmichael. Margaret was born on Islay. I always heard that Donald Carmichael was too. But definite records have eluded me so far. I won't like him any less if he was born elsewhere. I'd just like to know! Someday. Photo believed to be Margaret Gilchrist and Donald Carmichael, based on her appearance in similar images with my quite distinctive looking great grandmother, Janet, Margaret and Donald's daughter. Also very interested in any family of Margaret's first child, Diana Gilchrist, one of my very favourite relatives. You can guess why. Her father was John Gilchrist, also from Islay. Here is a link to a photograph of Diana Gilchrist and her husband Alexander McNabb(born on Islay in 1836) on my blog: https://canadagenealogy.blogspot.com/2008/09/1st-edition-of-canadian-genealogy.html I have some new DNA leads, so I have started to pick up this Islay research again. No, PAF5 will not run on Win10. I solved this problem by creating a Virtual Windows XP computer in the Win10 computer. That is to say, a friend created one for me. I did look at AQ but I didn't like some of the 'improvements' so have not yet migrated my data on 50,000+ relatives, plus quite a lot of files of unconnected people. I know in the past that some of the popular knock-offs did not support all the fields in PAF (birth and Bap, death & burial, etc). Any general advice? Roll call Lamont and Currie
Anne Goeden
Hello Listers My Islay names are Coll ( Colin) Lamont born about 1786 (at Portnellen, Kilmeny) in Islay. His parents were Donald Lamont and Janet McKechnie/McEachern. Coll Lamont was a dancing master and was living at Portnellan farm, Kilmeny on 1841 census. He was living at Loagin Farm, Kilmeny on the 1851 census. Coll Lamont's siblings that I know of were Archibald (married to Margaret Buie about 1811) , John (1769-1847) Godfrey ( 1773-1860), Gilbert ( 1788-1853, married to Janet Campbell 1830)) and Mary ( born c. 1780 married to a Murdoch Currie around 1800) Coll Lamont emigrated to Canada in 1851 to the Cheltenham district of Peel County, Ontario. In 1854 he moved to Saugeen township, Bruce County. He died in 1861 and is buried in Port Elgin Ontario. Coll Lamont's wife was Mary Currie. Mary Currie was born about 1794 possibly on Baluve Farm in Kilmeny. Mary died in 1877 ( three weeks after her brother) and is buried in Port Elgin. Children of Coll Lamont and Mary Currie ( all born in Kilmeny) were Mary 1826, Gilbert 1829, Donald 1833 ( my gg grandfather), Janet 1834 and Flora 1840. No baptisms have been found. Mary Currie had a brother Donald Currie ( 1806-1877). He emigrated to the Cheltenham area of Peel County in the early 1830s. ( guess) He married Sarah ( Marion ) Campbell daughter of John Campbell and Catharine Sinclair on 25 Feb 1836 in Chinguacousy Township, Peel County, Ontario. Children of Donald Currie and Sarah Campbell were Flora 1836, John 1838, Dugald 1839, Catharine 1841,Alexander 1843, George 1844, Janet 1846, Donald 1848, Colin 1850, Lachlan 1852, Neil 1854 and Mary Anne 1856 . Donald Currie and family moved to Saugeen Township in 1854. He died in 1877 and is buried in Port Elgin. I don't know who are the parents of Mary and Donald Currie. I also don't know who their other siblings were. One possible sibling or cousin of Mary and Donald Currie is Alexander Currie born c. 1798 who married Mary Bowie. He emigrated to Canada in 1851 ( same year as Mary Currie) and settled in Egremont Township. Some of my cousins have dna matches to the descendants of this Alexander Currie. Since I have no church records for my ancestors, I am very lucky that they show up on the 1841 and 1851 census. I have an obit for my ggg grandmother Mary Currie ( wife of Coll Lamont) and her brother Donald. Mary had been baptized in the Saugeen River in 1869 by a Baptist minister. Anne Goeden |
