Re: Roll Call
Doug Carmichael
Hello All, I am interested in the Carmichael families of Islay. I have pretty good information as far back as Dougald Carmichael ,dob 1774 , marring Mary McNeill dob 1778. Her parents were Lachland McNeill and Janet Wright . I do not have any information
on Dougalds parentage .Most of information I have is from the work of A. Currie and done some years before the internet. I have been unable to find when and why Carmichaels arrived on Islay. Family oral history has us as a Sept of the Starts of Appin.
My branch upstakes in the 1860' to Grey County, Ontario, joining relatives who had done so earlier. Members of the family also moved to the Swan Valley of Manitoba about this time.
I did find a reference to there being 3 or more Septs of Carmichael on Islay but I have been unable to "rediscover" this information. If this rings a bell with anyone please let me know. Cheers to one and all Douglas Carmichael

Russ or Roger, Would the Euphemia below be the d/o John (James) Morrison & Christian McFadyen, born 9 May, chr. 10 Aug 1834, Kilchoman? The date of death of Angus is missing below. Is it missing from the MI?

Re: McFadyens & McNabbs
Ken Harrison
Does anyone have data on the birth and parents of Anne McNABB, the wife of Angus McFADYEN. She was apparently born c1825, possibly at Bowmore, and she and her husband both died in Ontario.
I have 3 possible matches for her as a child in Islay, but nothing concrete to prove a connection.

Donald McGilvray of Ballachlavan ca 1833
Russ McGillivray
Roger,
Could I ask you a favour? As I mentioned in my introductory email, in 1833 Donald is married to Ann McDuffie and has a son baptized at Kilmeny. (I assume they were married because the child was not noted as illegitimate in the baptismal record.) About 1836 Ann and her son leave for Canada with her parents and some siblings. So what happened to Donald between 1833 and 1836? He could have abandoned her, or he could have died of natural causes or in some accident. Do you have in your records any information that might help, e.g. a newspaper clipping of a death? Thanks, Russ

Anyway, if you have any info or photos that would be great but do
not spend more time on it that you can afford Thank-you! Phil Hubsmith, Erskine, Scotland

Hi Roger, Thank-you! some great information for my family tree - Angus and Ann are my GG Grandparents on my mothers side with Donald the Postmaster being the brother of my G Grandfather Hugh McFadyen. The new group has given me the push to get back researching! Is there somewhere I can get more info for the graves at Bowmore
(Bowmore new parish churchyard?) - grave list and location,
Donald's does not seem to be listed in findagrave web site, I am
contemplating a visit in spring or summer this year I apologise if some questions are pretty 'basic', I am a bit of a novice at family research Once again thank-you! Phil Hubsmith, Erskine, Scotland On 25/01/2020 09:44, Roger via

Surnames McGilvray, McDuffie
Russ McGillivray
I am descended from Donald McGilvray, son of "Donald or Peter" McGilvray and Anne McDuffie, who was born in 1833. They were of Ballachlavan, called "the worst wadset in the countrie" by the Book of Islay but which has the distinction of belonging to the churchyard of Finlaggan. Anne was the daughter of Alexander McDuffie and Marion McLellan. The McDuffie family, including Anne and her son Donald McGilvray, emigrated to Oro Township in Ontario in 1836. Anne married Alexander McLean, formerly of Esknish, about 1840 and had 7 more children.
I have my "best guesses" as to who Donald McGilvray's parents were (Malcolm McGilvray and Anne McCoag) and grandparents (Donald McGilvray and Ann Ferguson). I have taken the autosomal DNA test (Gedmatch kit A657192) and the Y-700 test. My closest Y matches are three McGillivrays (yeah!) but the common ancestors lived 400 years ago or more. It would be wonderful to have another Islay McGilvray descendant take the Y-700 test. Russ

Craock or Craast or Cruach?
Russ McGillivray
Phil, The baptismal record says Craock in the OPR transcription in Steve Gilchrist’s website. In my database I have the ‘corrected place’ as Craast. But I don’t know where the correction came from. It could have been from the IGI index of Islay McGilvray baptisms I photocopied many years ago. But regardless, neither place appears anywhere else in all the baptisms on Islay Nor do they appear in Bob McQueen’s index of Islay places. Looking at all the other places in Kilarrow that are spelled similarly, my guess is that it should be Cruach. Other members who might have an idea should know the baptism in question was in 1792.

Re: Roll Call ?
Russ McGillivray
Phil, Years ago I put together a database of Islay McGilvrays. I have that Ann who married Angus McFadyen (18 Jan 1831, Kilarrow) was baptized 19 Jun 1794, Kilarrow, daughter of Donald McGilvray and Florence Fletcher. When Ann was baptized her father was already deceased. He was a herdsman at Craast in 1791 when their daughter Catharine was baptized. Donald and Florence married 24 Feb 1788 at Kilarrow. Ann’s death in 19 Mar 1874, Kilarrow, is in Ted Larsen’s database of Islay Death Registrations. By the way, Hugh’s baptism was 1 Jun 1834 so the birthdate of 1835 is a bit late.

Hi Diane/All, Hello and best wishes to everyone! My interest is with McFadyen, McGilvary, Morrison, McEwan - I believe mainly from Bowmore My great grandparents are: - Hugh McFadyen: B 1835 - D 1907 / Elizabeth Morrison - (photo attached): B 1841 - D 1922. Both born in Bowmore but moved to Dumbarton and then Clydebank. Hugh's brother Donald was the Post Master at 'old' Bowmore Post Office, now a private residence and to the left of The Lochside Hotel on Shore Steet - 2 x photos attached Hugh and Elizabeth had 8 children?: John, Catherine, Euphemia, Flora (my grandmother), Elizabeth, Mary Anne, Margaret, Angus - oldest, B 1862 - D 1929 Hugh's parents were: Angus McFadyen and Anne McGilvary / Elizabeth's parents were: John Morrison: B 1791? - Dead at 1851 and Margaret (or Anne) McEwan: B 1801 Note: Many of the above dates are from 'scribbles' and need to be verified Thank-you to everyone involved in getting this up and running - I will follow with interest Phil Hubsmith, Erskine. Re: Family members
Rebecca Campbell
Hi John ,
My 3G Grandmother was Elizabeth Graham who married William Campbell in 1801 they lived at both Taycarmagan
and Ballivicar. Ultimately Elizabeth and some of their children would emigrate to Canada in the 1840s. I believe that one of William and Elizabeth's daughters married a McArthur as there is an Ann McArthur in the 1841 census with the family and she is treated
comparable to the known grandchild that is there rather than the hired help. Very likely that we are connected.

Re: Family members - McArthur
John Kemplen
Hi Merle The tendency to concentrate on male lines because those give
continuity of surname means that I know very little about my
McArthurs, as Mary McArthur was my mother's mother's mother. Mary
was born in Kilchiaran in 1850 to parents Alexander McArthur
(agricultural labourer) and Margaret McLellan. She married John
Campbell from Ballachlaven, Kilmeny in 1876 and died at Ayen in
1935. Ayen is between Ballygrant and Bridgend, near Ballimartin.

Hi Everyone, I’m from Australia and interested in the McArthur and Graham family lines. Members lived in/around, Balevicar, Ballineal, Kildalton, Bowmore, Killarrow.(unsure of these spellings as I have seen a variety of spelling ways). Especially interested in these families prior to 1830. Cheers.
