I will upload this. If not too big, I will add a column for DNA Gedmatch users and a column for family tree locations e.g. FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, if applicable. I am going to recheck our privacy rules first. Then members can go in and add to it or change e-mail addresses, etc. So good to see my mailbox full of Islay people! Diane

My Islay ancestry goes back to Alexander McCaog 1761-1843 (various spellings) and Flora McNeil 1776-1836, both of Bowmore (married 29 Mar 1789 at Bowmore) via Colin, illegitimate son their son Lachlan and Catherine McArthur “a native of Kildalton”.

Re: Roll Call ?
My families are: Duncan Sinclair and wife Sarah Sinclair from Sanaigmore immigrated to Erin, Ontario area about 1835. They were married in Glassence which is now the Port Charlotte area. Andrew McNabb and wife Janet McFadgen. Andrew’s parentage is a bit fuzzy but there are McNabbs from Lyrabus. His eldest son was born at Tighandrom. Janet was born at Knock (Cnoc Raonastil) and she is the daughter of John McFadgen and Flora Keith. Andrew and Janet immigrated to Erin, Ontario with family about 1853. John McArthur and Anne “Nancy” McArthur (maybe Taylor) of Port Ellen. I am not sure of either parentage. Anne died on Islay about 1851. John immigrated to Erin, Ontario with his family, Isabella, Anne, Donald, Charles and Margaret about 1873. Alexander McKechnie (census while living on Islay uses McEachern and some of the family maintains this after immigration to Canada) and Sarah (Marrion) McLachlan. Alexander lives at Sean-Ghairt, Kilmeny and dies before the family immigrates to Erin, Ontario about 1834. His parentage is unclear. Sarah’s parents are also unknown to me. She immigrates with her children Donald, John, Flora, Ann, Duncan, Mary, Neil and Christina. Donald MacLean and wife Anne McLachlan both born on Islay but I am not sure of location. They immigrated to Erin, Ontario about 1835. I do not have certain parents for either. Merle

Hi, everyone.
There are now 177 of us here. Would you like to start a roll call? Just the Islay people's names and places you are interested in.
I am thinking we can also build up a database for the people we are researching.
We can post images too - however - there is an overall size limit for images on free lists here. So be cautious and resize them, please. I would love to see photos of those we know came from Islay, if we have them.

Re: Roll Call ?

Hello Islay cousins! My name is Michael Jeffrey Montgomery and I am interested in my Montgomery ancestors who lived on Islay for about 5 generations until they moved to Canada in 1842. My 3rd great grandfather George Montgomery founded the original Octomore
Distillery outside Port Charlotte on his father John's farm of the same name. My family is deeply entangled with the Campbell's, McAllister's, Currie's, McVorren (Morrison) and McDermit's. I'm on wikitree (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Montgomery-8781),
Ancestry and recently became a co-administrator of the Montgomery family group page on FTDNA. My Y (male line) Haplogroup is J2 (J-M172, J-L26) and my Gedmatch ID is T182699. My brick wall for the last few years is trying to figure out how the Montgomery family
came to live on Islay when we appear to be descended from the Ancient Montgomery clan in Easglesham, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Any help or information on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Roll Call ?
Elizabeth Lear
My great-great-grandfather was Duncan Carmichael, born in Killarrow around 1830. His parents were Archibald Carmichael and Isabella McDougall, and the family moved to Ontario when he was a child (late 1830s). From there, they moved to Michigan in the 1850s. Archibald Carmichael's parents were Angus Carmichael and Elizabeth Stewart. Isabella McDougall's parents were Duncan McDougall and Christian Graham. I haven't been able to go back further than that because of the naming practices confusion. Islay Families: Carmichael, McDougall, Stewart, Graham. Best, Elizabeth

Betty Macey
Hi all.

My 4xG Grandfather Hector McInnes married Marion McCaffer at Kilchoman on 17 December 1822. The 1851 census shows most of the family living at Coullabus and gives Hector’s place of birth as Rothesay, Isle of Bute. Hector died in 1856 in Port Glasgow - there is no forename for his father but his mother is given as Mary Johnson. Marion McCaffer’s place of birth is usually given as Kilmeny or Kilchoman, probably about 1790. Frustratingly, I have never been able to find a death certificate for her though she was still living with her daughter Isabella Grant and my 3xG Grandfather, her son Neil b. Kilchoman c 1833. There is plenty of evidence of other activity by family members around Port Glasgow and Greenock during mid to late 1800s (not least that my grandfather, another Neil McInnes, told me that there were so many of us that there was a close in Greenock called McInnes Close) but Marion McCaffer McInnes vanishes from records after 1861. The children of Hector and Marion that I know of are Duncan, Marion, Isabella, Neil, John, Peter, and Donald, all born between about 1827-1839 at Kilchoman. Betty McInnes Macey

Re: Roll Call ?

Hi Diane: Thank you for all your work with the group! I have wonderful memories of our get togethers in Ontario and Islay. My gr-grandfather, John McNabb was born on Islay in 1842. He immigrated to Ontario before 1865. His sister, Martha married Archibald Currie in Glasgow in 1866. (Arch was also from Islay.) Their daughter, Kate, was born in January 1867 and supposedly learned to walk on the ship to Ontario about 1869. A "cousin" just helped me locate their brother, Colin, who also eventually ended up in Ontario with their parents, John and Cathrine. Before living in Port Ellen, John and Cathrine lived in Ballychatrigan and Lyrabus. I believe John's parents were Alexander McNabb and Martha Campbell. Not sure about Cathrine. John's and Martha's families both ended up in Chicago and many members are buried there. Colin and the parents died in Ontario. This is John and his wife Margaret Galloway (born in Ontario). I assume this is their son, John, although they had a daughter, Martha, first. Carolyn Harmon
