Just food for thought on your McArthur family. You are probably aware that the Kilchoman records before 1823 (I think) were destroyed by fire. Sure makes it hard to build a tree when there are no records to work with.

Purely hypothetical guessing game using some known data and related to my family. My Margaret McArthur b. 1773 Kilchoman was married to Gilbert Currie. Margaret’s parents per her death record are James McArthur and Catherine McDermid - Probably born circa 1740’s. Potential parents of Duncan.

Margaret was born about the generation of Duncan McArthur as James was born 1805. One of Margaret’s sons is named Duncan. Naming conventions would say that if Duncan had a son – a likely name would be James - for this father. Of course we don’t know Duncan’s other children…but… below are the birth records in Kilchoman for other McArthur’s in the sameish (is that a word?) generation as James. James’s mother being Mary Currie – there should be a daughter Mary (in a perfect world) and a son Duncan. These would help give you leads to siblings of James. If you follow potential siblings, find their death records – you might find confirmation. It’s just a thought. It worked for me – finding some of Gilbert Currie and Margaret McArthur’s children – and my DNA matches are starting to add icing to the cake.

Sorry for the jumble of records – I should have made an excel spreadsheet to manipulate. Father is named first, then mother, then child’s name and date of baptism, date of birth and parish.

Other than births of James and Annabella’s children Remember – these are just leads for possible siblings of James. Which might lead to Duncan and Mary. I did not look at the census records for additional information. And of course, people move around and not all children are baptized, etc. etc.

I have long had a 'brickwall' concerning my g.g. grandparents on Islay, but with the renewed interest and more DNA studies, I'm hoping someone might be able to enlighten me. My g.grandmother, Mary McArthur, christened 14 Mar 1840 at Islay House Farm, was daughter to James McArthur, b. abt. 1805 (Ag lab at Islay House), and Annabella McGilvray (b. abt. 1807), Marriage, 13 Feb 1827 at Kilchoman. Annabella was daughter to Archibald McGilvray (b, abt. 1776, Kilarrow, d. 5/04/1859) and Margaret McInnes (b. abt. 1772, Kilmeny). Archibald's parents were Alexander McGilvray and Marion McTaggart. Marriage, 21 Mar 1773, Kilarrow (names on certificate were 'Alex McIloray and Marrion McIntagart). So far, so good with that.......problem is with the elusive James McArthur. Still trying to find if he was from Islay (marriage certificate says he was from from Kilchoman at time of marriage), and some subsequent census taken says he was. Copy I have of his death certificate ( June, 1866, Glasgow) with info given by widow, Annabella, says his parents were Duncan McArthur and Mary Currie. Can find nothing anywhere, so far to confirm. Roger McWee could not find as to Islay, and have turned up nothing via Scotlands People that might shed some light in a concrete manner. I am not particularly savvy as to computers or research, so hoping someone might fill in some of the gaps in this family, as younger members of my family are now interested in their lineage, for which I am grateful. Hi, Ken. I also used to use PAF and was upset when my computer died and I couldn't get it again. Fortunately, I had already put all of my stuff on FamilySearch, so that's what I do now. I just add new finds to FamilySearch online. You don't have to be a member of the LDS Church o use FamilySearch.

And I notice that a high proportion of the replies are posted without the message to which they refer. Especially when the subject line is incorrect, this makes such messages almost useless.

This seems to happen when replies are sent using the links at the bottom. The only way I could find to include the original on this is to use “reply” in my mail system.

My ancestors are:  Stewart, McEwing/McEwen/McOuin; Brown; McTaggart; McCaig/McCuaig; Wallace; Stevenson; McGeachy; Gilchrist

Archibald McEwing, born btwn 1730-40, married Katherine McTaggart in Kildalton on Dec. 21, 1759.  Son John McEwing born 1761 in Kildalton, married Janet McTaggart on Feb. 7, 1790.  
A son John born 1807, married Flora Stevenson, daughter of Neil Stevenson and Catherine McTaggart, about 1825.  Child from the marriage was Joseph McEwing, born July 24, 1828 in Killallan, died Jun 14, 1888 in Campbeltown, Argyll.  Joseph married Mary Wallace, daughter of John Wallace and Margaret Gilchrist on Dec. 13, 1853 in Campbeltown.  Mary was born on Jan. 6, 1829 in Killean. A child from this marriage was Catherine McEwing, born March 10, 1857 in Campbeltown, died May 18, 1921.
Catherine married Hugh Stewart on Dec. 1, 1885.  Hugh was son of John Stewart and Mary McCaig/McCuaig.  Hugh was born in August 1846 in Easdale.  Mary McCaig was daughter of Donald McCaig and Betsy Brown.  John was a Tinsmith.
Hugh & Catherine had a son, Robert McEwing Stewart, born July 25, 1886, died July 25 1958 in Winnipeg, MB Canada.

Hugh Stewart is my “brick wall”.  He was my paternal grandfather and I want to know where and when he died.  After a hasty marriage to Catherine, he seems to have disappeared.  I have early records of his life….he was a Masons Labourer.  At age 17 he joined the army, 73rd Foot, and served long enough to have a Chelsea Pension.  I’ve been unable to find any further record of his whereabouts and his death.  Any help most appreciated!!

Hi

I am Anne (McNabb) Farrar. My ancestors from Islay were tenants in the Oa. Andrew and Catherine (McMath) McNabb were born in the 1770’s and married at Kildalton in February of 1802. In 1830 2 of their elder sons Andrew and Duncan arrived in Canada and in 1832 they took up land in Oro Township, Simcoe County Ontario. Over the next 20 years a total of 6 sons and a daughter all moved to Oro Township. Most of the children had married in Islay and some had several children when they arrived in Canada.

Surnames include McNabb, McMath (Matheson), McEachern, Morrison, Woodrow, McCuaig

My ancestor Lachlan McKinnon (1769-1824) a tenant on Kynagarry Farm married Isabella MacMillan (1759?-1861) in the daughter of Archibald MacMillan Of Tockmal, Oa in the Parish of Kildalton. If you would like to see it I’d be happy to send you all that I know of both of them and a few photos of the remains of Tockmal taken in 2010. I also have a photo of Lachlan’s gravestone in the grounds of the old Kilmeny church. I haven’t been actively researching recently due to grandparenting duties, but my gg grandmother Ann/ Annie McMillan was from Bowmore, born around 1835/6. She married a John McPhail in Glasgow, but after 9 years of marriage and no children , he died in 1871. Less than 2 years later she gave birth to my g grandmother Mary Fraser McMillan, who was always known as Mary McPhail. I have no way of knowing who her father was. I have attached Mary’s photo, with her children, including my grandmother.
I have also attached the family tree , in case it is of any interest, showing Mary’s ancestors in Islay. ( The blue boxes show marriage dates. ) Although I researched the McPhail side they are really not connected to my family.

Lamont Angus b. 1767 (grandfather of Angus b.1837) Port Ellen Remained in Islay

I am searching the McMillan, Black, Johnston, McKinnon, and Calder names, from Lagavulin and Port Ellen. Parish of Kildalton.

Some of the family emigrated to South Western Quebec and Victoria County, Ontario. Some stayed in Islay.

I currently live in Stratford, Ontario
